Wintry showers are expected to hit parts of the UK later this week as the Met Office warns of widespread frost and freezing weather.
Temperatures will plummet as rain starts in the north east of England on Thursday.
Strong winds in the north mean colder conditions will then sink south on Friday as wintry showers continue in the north east.
Over the weekend it will mostly be dry and sunny but a widespread frost is expected because of low temperatures.
Temperatures are expected to dip to as low as -2°C overnight, but a ‘good deal of bright weather’ will cover the UK into the weekend.
The colder air will continue to sink south over the weekend, reaching all parts of the country with the exception of the far southwest.
During the rest of the week it remains more settled and today it is mostly cloudy with a few outbreaks of rain and drizzle affecting northern areas, particularly around the west of Scotland.
Some sunshine is expected although cloud from the west brings the chance of patchy rain.
Tonight will stay cloudy with drizzle in places and a large band of rain is expected to soak Scotland and it will remain windy in the north of England and Northern isles.
Tomorrow a band of rain will spread across the south and it will turn brighter before the wintry showers hit the north east.
