Pints of beer

Did you know there’s a European city where a pint of beer costs less than a bottle of water in the UK?

Yes, really.

The average cost of a pint in the UK is a whopping £6.09, but you don’t have to go far for the prices to come down – way down.

Debrecen, a city in northern Hungary, is the place to be if you’re thirsty and on a budget. Pints there cost just 89p, which is Europe’s cheapest and more than six times cheaper than the UK.

And when you’re not heading to a pub, there’s lots to do… in fact, Debrecen is home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Hortobagy National Park, which is north of the city centre, is a huge area of plains and wetlands, and home to some pretty impressive wildlife. Lucky visitors will spot water buffalo, cattle and horses, ridden by traditional herdsmen known as Csikós.

Luckily, the Hungarian city is pretty easy to reach, with Wizz Air operating return flights from London Luton for less than £100.
