The dominatrix wants sex workers to finally be accepted – but she knows her ideas are controversial (Picture: LatexFashionTV)
The dominatrix wants sex workers to finally be accepted – but she knows her ideas are controversial (Picture: LatexFashionTV)

Countess Diamond has built hundreds of thousands of followers on OnlyFans, flitting between clients to help them express all manner of fetish or kink-based desires.

The Bristolian dominatrix is also fighting for the rights of sex workers.

She’ll soon be flying out to Brussels to give a parliamentary talk on what needs to change, such as a the creation of a ‘fairtrade alliance’ for porn workers to ensure the more murky sides of the industry see light.

Countess, speaking on Metro.co.uk’s Smut Drop podcast, says: ‘As soon as we [sex workers] say that we want to be treated equally, the rest of the world goes “well, we have due diligence, we have regulation, we have authorities, we have boards.”

‘At the moment we don’t really have that in the porn industry. We are governed by each other and it’s word-of-mouth.’

35-year-old Countess also tells host Miranda Kane how she wants to see the porn industry regulated in the future, suggesting that there could be some sort of logo or symbol given to venues or studios to show they had been safely vetted for sex workers.

However, Countess is aware her ideas may not go down well with everyone.

‘They’ll think I’m trying to santatise the industry’, she admits.

‘If that is a byproduct then I’m really sorry, but I feel like the only way we can really get accepted into society is to be as legitimate as the other industries.’

Another one of Countess’ ideas to shake up the industry is for successful porn stars to give back to those who may be struggling at the beginning of a, potentially turbulent, sex work career.

The 35-year-old explains: ‘I’m going to make sure they’re protecting the other people in this industry. We have to be in this together.

‘There’s findoms [fetish lifestyle activity in which a submissive is required to give gifts or money to a dominant] who claim to make £5,000 a day. Making all this money is fabulous but you need to be paying a bit of that back into the system which sustains your living. If you’re not doing that, you’re a d*** of a person.’

During her chat with Miranda, Countess also reflects on her own seven year career in the industry.

Countess Diamond
Countess began her career on OnlyFans (Picture: LatexFashionTV/Countess Diamond)

She recalls how when she started on OnlyFans as it launched in 2016, it was a ‘wild west’ of content which has since been clamped down on. Something she is adamant is best for the community.

Now, Countess says, she thrives on the ‘powerful’ connection she has during the intensity with her clients.

‘I’ve always been a little bit naughty, a bit sneaky,’ she says. ‘But I was drawn more initially to fetish-wear more than kink. I was obsessed with latex and the feel of it. It was all about aesthetics to begin with then I realised “oh hang on there’s also this whole heap of fun you can have that I don’t know about, I’m in.”

‘I found myself in a career where I can choose what to do and when to do it. I’ve been doing this for seven years now and I can’t wait for what the future holds.’

How to make the most of this London luxury hotspot whatever your budget  https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/24/make-this-london-luxury-hotspot-whatever-budget-19869629/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/24/make-this-london-luxury-hotspot-whatever-budget-19869629/#respond Fri, 24 Nov 2023 09:58:29 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19869629
Is it possible to be cost-savvy as well as fashion-savvy in London's most luxuirous neighborhood?
Is it possible to be cost-savvy as well as fashion-savvy in London’s most luxuirous neighborhood?

You might think you need to take out a second mortgage if you want to spend a day in London’s fancy old Knightsbridge quarter – but if you’re super-savvy with your cash, turns out you can have a great day living it up like a local.

So if it’s a place you’ve either avoided because you thought it was only for people who drive supercars and drip with jewellery, then think again.

Not only can you pop into Harrods for lunch and still come out with change from a tenner (thanks to their £7 sandwiches from the Roast and Bake takeaway), but there are so many hidden hot spots to enjoy without breaking the bank.

Here’s how I did it…

Walk it baby

As is the case with many London areas - the best way to explore is by foot (Picture: Claie Wilson)
As is the case with many London areas – I discovered the best way to explore Knightsbridge is by foot (Picture: James Christiansen)

The best way to explore Knightsbridge is to first take a detour away from the iconic Brompton Road and explore the side streets.

Of course, knowing where to start is always a good thing, which is why the Knightsbridge partnership has just launched an interactive map which gives a tour of neighbourhood and must see-highlights, from the beautiful Mandarin Oriental and Bulgari hotels, to tourist must-sees like Wellington Arch, Jane Austen’s blue plaque and the historical Brompton Oratory.

Another gem to discover off the beaten track is the The Map House, which offers a beautifully presented history and geography lesson on London and beyond, through their 10,000-odd maps. Visitors are more than welcome to browse rather than buy, too.

Meanwhile, if you need a quick coffee-stop but don’t want to pay a fortune for a flat white, the Co. London is a great side street shout, with a lattes coming in at £3.50.

It’s also worth considering that if there’s a group of you going and you want to do some touristing without the usual clichés, then hiring a Blue Badge Tourist Guide could be an option. Sophie Campbell really knows her stuff – from sharing stories of how yesterday’s hay stables became today’s must have loft apartments, to the spooky tale behind the Grenadier pub’s ceiling covered in bank notes. Get a group of 10 of you together and a half day – 4 hours walk – costs around £28 each.

Clothes shopping in Harrods – but not as you know it

Hidden gems - and hidden bargains - can be found within Harrods (Picture: Ed Reeve)

While it’s all great and lovely if you can afford the likes of Christian Louboutin and Alexander McQueen, but also hidden away on the fourth floor of London’s most glitzy deparment store is the most amazing budget-friendly pop up.

Called My Wardrobe HQ, there are rails of outfit to rent – from as little as £7, yes, really. And it’s not cut-price brands on offer either. You can rent a Victoria Beckham dress for as little as £10 a day, while there’s plenty to choose from with designers Needle & Thread, Ganni and Isabel Marant to Vampire’s Wife and Zimmerman. Meanwhile, if you head to their website you can even find a £10k Burberry coat on their loan list – although that comes in at £147 a day.

Away from Harrods, if you’re a bit of a budget fashion hound, try The Octavia Foundation’s flagship preloved store on the Brompton Road, which sometimes has high-quality donated goods, including designer and vintage pieces – so well worth a rummage.

Meanwhile, also worth a look is the Pandora Dress Agency. Established in 1947, it offers second hand designer clothes and while most are still eye-wateringly expensive, if you want to splurge/invest on some vintage goodies, they often have an amazing sale.

Go green

If you’re heading Knightsbridge way it would be a crime not to explore at least some of the 350 acres of the historic Grade I-listed Hyde Park.

One of the eight Royal Parks and once Henry VIII’s private hunting grounds, it’s home to the most stunning landscape alongside a largescale bronze Pan Statue, the famous Speaker’s Corner – andcurrently Winter Wonderland. It also holds the brilliant Serpentine Lake (open Wednesday to Sunday between November and March), where you can hire a pedalo from £6.60 for an adult.

Fine dining on a budget

Sat at the Wellington Arch end of Knightsbridge is the glorious Lanesborough Hotel, famed for being a favourite of the stars from Madonna to Mariah Carey. It’s also the setting for the Lanesborough Grill restaurant.

Here, if you go a la carte, a plate of (very delicious) Grilled aged English sirloin, bone marrow and oxtail can set you back £52 alone. However, opt for the two course festive set menu and it comes in for almost the same price at £55per person.

Their 2024 set menu comes in even cheaper, with two courses for £39 per person and three courses for £49.50 pp – which means you get all the fanciness and food to-die-for, but at a fraction of the price.

It’s also worth noting that no matter what your budget, the staff treat every customer like an A-lister, replacing napkins when used and topping up glasses without ever needing to be asked. (And the cheese trolley is seriously good!)

For an end of the day drink

Okay, so there’s three ways you can do this. If you want to spoil yourself after a long day of money saving, head to Harrod’s swanky Baccarat bar in the basement of the store. Here the cocktails are next level – but also a bit pricey. For example, the tequila-based Cool Blues really does hit the spot… and the wallet, at £26 a pop.

Relax while overlooking the Knightsbridge skyline with a Fifth Floor Cocktail masterclass

More mid-price cocktails can be found if you head to Harvey Nichol”s Fifth Floor Bar at the top of the shop, where another tequila based offering, the Tokyo Margariti, will set you back £15. (Although this place doesn’t quite have the exclusive feel of the Bacarrat, the bar has a fun, buzzy vibe and also runs a weekend cocktail masterclass which includes breakfast, lunch, and cocktails for £70 per person – and looked great fun).

However, if you’re still determined to stick to the budget, then The Paxtons Head in the heart of Knightsbridge, is just as good a place as any for a drink.

While this 1900s boozer has a great selection of wine, beer and soft drinks (as well as mirrors with a great story behind them), it doesn’t have such an eclectic mix of cocktails on offer. Although you can get a Mojito Spritzer for under a tenner, so still does the job!

Spend a day eating, drinking and shopping in Knightsbridge for less than £70

Coffee to start the day – £3.50

2-course lunch £39 (plus beverages)

Pedalo on the Serpentine – £6.60

VB rental dress from Harrods – £10

Cocktail – £9

Stop telling trans people ‘you can always tell’ https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/24/stop-telling-trans-people-you-can-always-tell-19860693/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/24/stop-telling-trans-people-you-can-always-tell-19860693/#respond Fri, 24 Nov 2023 09:43:46 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19860693

It is misogyny and patriarchy at its core (Picture: Sharon Kilgannon)

I am perceived as a woman everywhere I go and by everyone I meet in real life.

Whether that’s by strangers on the street, the doctor, going through security at the airport, in clothing shops, grocery stores, or on the train. It’s especially so when I’m catcalled on the street by men, or sexually harassed at concerts or other public events.

So it’s laughable to me when people – almost exclusively keyboard warriors online – say that ‘you can always tell’ when someone is transgender, which is usually meant as an insult.

But often, that’s just not always the case, and it leans heavily on stereotypes about people’s looks and bodies. In fact, the idea that you can ‘always tell’ is rooted in transphobia, and it needs to be called out as such.

As a very public trans person, I quite regularly share positive experiences I’ve had and how my friends, family, and the people around me support me for who I am.

I also share thoughts about trans rights at large, as well as positive stories about the solidarity between inclusive organisations and women’s organisations in Iceland – where I’m from.

As a result, I get my share of negative comments and abuse on social media

For the most part, it’s always the same things – people belittling my identity, discrediting my experiences of discrimination and prejudice, or even threatening me. While it might’ve once affected me and my mental health, I now just feel pity for those who do it.

But now, it feels like there’s an explosion of the tired ‘you can always tell’ jibes.

What it means, in short, is that these online trolls are convinced you can ‘always tell’ someone is trans by the way they look – that people are either too tall or too short, their hands are too big, or too small, or that their pelvic bone structure or Adam’s apple is prominent.

Obviously both trans people and cis people come in all shapes and sizes, so many of these ‘standards’ are quite arbitrary and end up including plenty of people who aren’t trans under the criteria.

It seems to me that they are so consumed by their hatred and prejudice for trans people that they cannot fathom other people supporting and loving us

So whenever I, or other trans people, share positive stories of acceptance or experiences where it was obvious people don’t know we were trans, the trolls start commenting that that’s not possible because you can ‘always tell’.

On the few occasions that I do engage with these people, I just reiterate my point and tell them that their ‘opinion’ of a real life situation they have no insight into is irrelevant. I know my lived experience, and no amount of online abuse or theorising is going to change that.

Alongside this, apparently loved ones are ‘just being nice’ to trans people when they treat us with respect and use our correct pronouns.

According to these trolls, my ‘family is lying’ to me to ‘keep the peace’, and that everyone always knows I’m trans wherever I go – it’s only because of ‘make-up and filters’ that I can ‘pass as a woman’, and that I’d never leave the house with no make-up and joggers.

None of that is true, and I marvel at people’s confidence to make things up in order to try and hurt me. My family fully supports me, and my wardrobe is probably 90% made up of comfortable clothes and jumpsuits. In fact, I hate wearing make-up and certainly don’t use filters that change my physical appearance online. I have no need for it.

Thankfully, I’ve developed a tough exterior and I am able to brush it off. But this narrative still seems to permeate into just about every discussion about trans lives and their lived experiences.

Ugla sitting on steps in front of a yellow house door, wearing red lipstick, a black t-shirt and looking to camera
According to these trolls, my ‘family is lying’ to me (Picture: Sharon Kilgannon)

In my experience, those that resort to this sort of behaviour are people who are usually deeply transphobic and hold very hostile views towards people like me. It puzzles me what they get out of it, but I can’t help but feel these people must be so deeply sad and consumed by their bigotry that they don’t see how ridiculous they are.

My family and friends fully support who I am, and couldn’t be more delighted to call me their friend, sister, daughter, auntie and niece.

To them, it couldn’t be more natural because they see that this is who I’ve always been, and how much happier I am now that I don’t have to suppress who I am.

So some random person online saying I ‘shouldn’t be allowed’ couldn’t mean less to me, as it’s my parents’ opinion that is the only one that matters. I am their daughter, and no one will take that away from us – regardless of what people think.

I often wonder what has driven these people to a place in their life where they spend their time online abusing complete strangers, as well as obsessively stalking them on social media.

It seems to me that they are so consumed by their hatred and prejudice for trans people that they cannot fathom other people supporting and loving us. So they come up with all sorts of things to say to try and cling onto their misguided views in their online echo chambers.

More from Platform

Platform is the home of Metro.co.uk's first-person and opinion pieces, devoted to giving a platform to underheard and underrepresented voices in the media.

Find some of our best reads of the week below:

Will Castle shares the moment he found out his father had taken his own life from a traffic update on the radio.

Executive Chairman of Iceland Foods, Richard Walker, explains why his family's company are ditching their Christmas advert this year to help their customers.

Joy Munns' parents Mavis and Dennis were married for 60 years and very much in love, but when they both tried to kill themselves following Dennis's terminal diagnosis, Mavis was put on trial for his murder.

And finally, an anonymous bridesmaid recounts being subjected to constant demands by her bridezilla friend. She was left ghosted and with massive bills to pay.

It truly is a tragic state of being, and I have never been in such a miserable place in my life that I’ve felt the need to try and hurt other people. I truly hope they address whatever is causing them to behave in this way, because it’s so obvious to me that they are not happy in their lives.

This idea that you can ‘always tell’ is inherently built on binary stereotypes about people’s bodies and expression, that doesn’t only affect trans people, but anyone that doesn’t fit into these arbitrary standards.

It means that anyone can become a target of abuse as a result, and leads us down a dangerous road. I personally know many butch lesbians that regularly get accosted by people who think they are trans, simply because they don’t look like a ‘typical woman’.

It’s harmful to all of us, and the clear hyper focus towards trans women in relation to it is quite frankly misogyny and patriarchy at its core, and anyone calling themselves a feminist or someone fighting for equality should denounce such ideologies.

But the question is also: So what? So what if you could tell? Trans people still deserve respect and safety regardless, and your unwanted and unsolicited opinions about their expressions are unwanted, rude and downright creepy.

My suggestion is therefore that people get some real hobbies, and leave trans people alone

The reality is that trans people will continue existing and living their lives as themselves.

And no matter how much abuse they hurl at me, I will continue to live my life to the fullest – safe and supported by all my family and friends and society at large.

And nothing they say can ever change that.

Is there anything more annoying than a pesky breakout before a big date, night out out or a normal day in the office? Probably.

But ready to tackle your next uninvited pimple, Dots for Spots currently have 36% off in Black Friday sale at Amazon.

Now priced at just £4.49 for a pack of 24 dots, each one contains hydrocolloid acid, which works to create a ‘moist environment and optimum conditions for your spot to heal’ – yuck, but we’re into it.

The ‘easy to use’ patches can be applied directly to the spot in question – and help prevent you from picking, touching and popping. Just clean the area before with a little fash wash or cleanser, wait to dry and pop it on. It’s best to leave them on for over six hours – or overnight for it to really work its magic.

The Acne Patches are also incredible at minimising redness – just what the doctor ordered if you ask us…

Speaking of doctors, actress Jodie Comer, who’s best known for her roles in Killing Eve and Doctor Foster is also a fan of these translucent spot stickers.

In an interview with Harpers Bazaar back in 2022, Comer said: ‘I’ve recently discovered Dots for Spots Pimple Patches – they’re amazing.’

Just like the rest of us during the Covid days, Jodie explained how she also suffered with ‘maskne’. ‘I’ve been wearing a mask a lot in the theatre, I have been getting spots on the lower part of my face which is a nightmare [and] with the Baftas on Sunday I was like ‘oh no!’. The little stickers are flesh coloured and pretty subtle – I have one on right now.’

She went on to add: ‘If my skin is bad, sometimes covering up [with make-up] will make it worse. So if I can persevere for as long as I can with these I will.’

We love to see it when celebrities get real about their skin issues, don’t you?

And our Jodie isn’t the only one obsessed with these gunk-sucking stickers – but Hailey Bieber, Chrissy Teigan and Florence Pugh too.

Over 37,000 users have reviewed the Dots for Spots Acne Patches – and more than 40,000 people have ordered a pack in the last month! So you’ll need to get yours in the bag as soon as you can, because they won’t be around at this price for long.

One happy customer said: ‘Bought these as an emergency as I had a spot brewing on my face, not even at popping point but at the stage where you know it’s going to be a mountain soon. Whacked it on two days before and had it on for two nights and it was gone. I am OBSESSED with these and will definitely be buying again.’

Another called Dots for Spots ‘magic’ and exclaimed: ‘These work like magic! I simply stick it on a spot I have, usually overnight and it draws all the nastiness from the spot I have leaving it less inflamed and not as red.

A third review that caught our attention said: ‘I use these everytime I get a spot and by the morning it’s been sucked out! Sooooo satisfying!’

Sold, to the secretly-spot obsessed beauty editor that now wants to see the gunk come out of her own!

Black Friday is finally here and of all the deals we’ve seen, this one on crowd-pleasing mattresses may be one of the best yet.

Forget dirty talk in the bedroom. The only words that stir us into a frenzy nowadays are ‘discounts’ and ‘high quality mattresses’.

Happy Beds is the UK’s fastest-growing bed and mattress online retailer and its choice of orthopedic mattresses are designed to help you sleep like a baby and keep your back pain-free.

This is music to our ears considering nine hours a day spent hunched at our desks means the only curves our body has is the curve of our spine.

Plus, the Black Friday sale means it’s got some seriously impressive discounts. And no, we don’t mean a measly 5 or 10% off. We’re talking up to 70% off and savings of over £100. What a mother bleeping time to be alive.

If you’re looking at the reviews, the brand’s bestselling Signature Crystal 3000 Pocket Sprung Orthopaedic Natural Mattress appears to be the GOAT of mattresses.

Customers have been praising the mattresses in the reviews section.

The mattress is now £115 cheaper and currently on sale for £259.99. Ok, we know that is still a little spenny but can you really put a price on a good night’s sleep and much-needed support for your back? No you cannot. We’re adulting now, guys.

Aside from mattresses, Happy Beds is also selling their Loxley Grey Velvet Fabric Ottoman Storage Bed for £160 off.

It’s not just the Grinch who wants to steal Christmas – the months between October and January are the most common for burglaries.

Not only do the darker evenings create cover for thieves to go unseen, it’s also when we’re more likely to have high value items in our homes and leave them unattended for festive celebrations.

Nearly half of Brits close blinds and curtains or leave lights on while we’re out to try to deter burglars. They also found that 18% ask friends and family to check their door is locked, while 16% leave the TV or radio on so it looks like someone is in.

But these methods don’t always work.

Former burglar and home security expert Michael Fraser, who has featured on BBC’s Beat The Burglar, has revealed the most common home security errors we’re making, along with little-known tips to ensure you home stays safe.

Alarms

In today’s age a burglary can be done by an opportunist, not just a professional. Most burglars will be able to enter a property within three minutes, so when they are passing by and spot a home which is visibly empty, it can be very easy for them to access it without anyone noticing.

This is why you should install an alarm but also make sure it works.

Of the 43% of households that do have a security alarm installed, 18% don’t turn it on when they leave the home, either because it doesn’t work, they don’t know how to use it, they find pets and children setting it off a nuisance, or they only turn it on when they go on holiday.

Micheal Fraser, former burglar and security consultant

I would also strongly recommend purchasing an alarm that can be split between certain parts of the home, so that households with two floors can set an overnight alarm for the downstairs area.

Some brazen burglars will break in at night time even knowing the homeowner is in but will not want to end up in a confrontation. Putting an alarm on downstairs will notify you of any suspicious activity and deter the burglar from entering.

Leaving the alarm box dirty can be a signal to burglars too, showing it isn’t being serviced or used, so give it a wipe down every so often.

The back of the home

Most people often only consider what the front of the home looks like to burglars but forget about the back.

Over Christmas, your present-covered tree could be especially attractive to opportunistic thieves, so it’s advised to ensure windows and doors at the rear of the property are obscured, moving valuable items away from the line of vision.

Calendars

Additionally, you may want to keep your family calendar away from the eyes of potential burglars.

While a physical calendar may appear harmless, if it is visible from the window then burglars may use it to figure out what days and times the home will be left unattended.

I would always recommend closing the calendar when leaving, or at least moving it out of sight.

Personal documents

It isn’t just physical items burglars can nab – they may be looking to steal your identity.

The first thing burglars will do is look through a person’s wheelie bin, as they may be able to find documents or advertisements with the homeowner’s name on it and use it to claim their identity.

Households must ensure they shred or cut up all documents they throw away.

Locks

Cylinder locks on doors appeal more to burglars as they don’t hold very well, making your home seem like an easy target.

A deadlock is much stronger, more robust, and will make burglars less confident about attempting a break in.

Beware of the dog signs

One of the most common tips often given to households is putting up a ‘beware of the dog’ sign, however this provides more reason for burglars to attempt a break in.

When burglars see this sign, they immediately believe the home may have a pet flap and a weakened point of entry.

Spare keys

Another thing many homeowners do (around a third according to Toolstation, which carried out the research) is leave a spare key near the front door.

If you leave a key outside your home it is bound to be found. Burglars will be aware of all the common hiding spots and look for hints within the area, such as fresh soil in a certain spot compared to the rest of the lawn, or a pot which has slightly moved from its ring stain.

Avoid running the risk of a robbery and leave it with someone you trust instead.

Social media

Advertising you’re going to be away is a big no-no, either in person to people you don’t know or to your wider network online.

If travelling to the airport by taxi, order it to arrive down the road and don’t provide any information on where you are travelling abroad to.

With such a strong social media presence today, it is very easy for burglars to find out people’s locations, so try not to post any holiday snaps until after the trip is complete.

Parcels and packaging

With Christmas on the way, it’s wise to be careful of what burglars can spot outside your home.

Most burglars are constantly trying to identify weaknesses and mistakes households have made such as leaving new TV packaging by the outside bins or a parcel being left outside the front door.

Smart security

Smart security tools are among the best methods to keep burglars at bay. If you’ve had a break-in before, this makes you extra vulnerable to it happening again, so upgrading with gadgets that show would-be thieves you’re watching and allow you to instantly respond to suspicious activity may give you peace of mind.

By setting up a smart security system, burglars will be deterred from the home as they know the property is guarded. So, the software not only keeps the home secure, but also advertises the fact that you are well set up.

The consultant and motivational speaker suggests going for an option that includes two-way audio communication, remote control, and movement-activated floodlights for an all-round approach to safeguarding your home.

Welcome to How I Do It, the series in which we give you a seven-day sneak peek into the sex life of a stranger.

This week we hear from Marla*, a 41-year-old writer and mum-of-four from London, who has been with her husband since she was 25.

Marla says the pair are busting the myth that kids equal a sexless marriage. In fact, they have sex four to five times a week on average which ‘is way more sex’ than they had before they became parents.

‘I don’t want to pretend every sexual encounter we have could inspire sensuous, (preferably female-directed), erotica, because that’s definitely not the case,’ says Marla.

‘But I’m also happy that the narrative that your sex life disintegrates after children doesn’t have to be true.

‘For me, sex is also about self-discovery. We got together young and my experiences before my husband were all pretty vanilla. For example, I thought I would hate anal sex and find it painful, but we added that to our repertoire one night and I loved it so much that I now find myself initiating it every few months.

‘I’m thinking 2024 might be the year we go to a sex party together.’

So, without any further ado, here’s how she got on this week…

Monday

With four kids, weekends are non-stop – in a good way, but it’s just not conducive to sex the next day. Mondays don’t feel like a fresh start after a relaxing weekend; once the kids go to school, I try to start on my writing work first thing, but my brain is fried.

This is unfortunate considering I have two articles and an interview to manage today.

A therapy session I have is amazing and really useful, but takes a lot out of me emotionally, which also makes the possibility of sex less likely. And it’s only 11am.

No surprise then, that tonight ends a sexless wasteland, me crawling into bed at 9pm. Two of my kids are still awake (their dad took them to a cricket coaching session and they got home at 8pm), and it’s the two who share the room next to ours, so that’s another nail in the potential-for-intercourse coffin.

Tuesday

Recently, I’ve been getting intense hormonal symptoms each month (headaches, breast tenderness) which make me feel totally unsexy. Today, my stomach hurts and my digestive system is acting up, so I don’t even need to check my Moody app to know that something’s going on in my cycle.

My husband went to Paris for work and gives me a nudge-nudge, wink-wink when he snuggles into bed next to me at 10pm-ish… but it is a hard pass from me.

Sex with an aching tummy holds zero appeal.

Instead of getting it on, I tell my husband all about my symptoms. (Bonus of married life: you get to talk to someone about all the gross and embarrassing things happening to you.) I’m happy I’m communicating with him and can be so honest.

Equally, I feel anxious about my body symptoms and their impact on my mental health. Last year I had a back injury for months, and our sex life – and, as a consequence, my mood – took a hit.

I start watching a Christmas movie on Netflix and relax to sleep quickly.

Wednesday

It’s date night. I am so excited to have some 1:1 time with my hubby. Except, I’m still behind on work assignments after a child was home last week and I have an article due first thing tomorrow – when I’m supposed to be taking another child to visit a school – so I tell him I have to cancel.

I promise some mind-blowing sexual antics the next day. Bells, whistles, lingerie… ‘I’ll make it worth your while,’ I whisper into his ear, attempting to sound seductive as my fingers tap away frantically on my laptop.

No sex tonight, but my mind is buzzing when I get into bed at 11pm. My husband is asleep, so it’s me and my hand for some self-pleasure.

My mind races at night and sometimes the only way I can get to bed is with a bit of TLC… although often, it’s more for the mental release than the physical one.

Thursday

Today is one of those insanely overscheduled days where I see about 10 people, take a bunch of trains, do work in between and then have two evening school-related events I am supposed to go to.

Since our lives are so hectic, with both of us working alongside raising the kids, I often prioritise sex over a social engagement – I’m too exhausted to manage both.

I skip the school stuff, put on some lingerie which looks like something Xena: Warrior Princess might dress in, and I’m delighted when my husband started kissing my nipples and asks if he can eat me out (the best way for me to come).

Sex follows – missionary, but it’s great – and not at all surprisingly, I don’t regret missing the mums’ social/school info evening at all.

I need emotional connection to really enjoy sex, and I think that’s why our sex life feels better over the years. My body has changed, my moods are up and down, but my husband still sees me the way I’d love to be seen and knows exactly which buttons to push/kiss/lick.

Friday

Disaster: I discover a moth larva in my younger kids’ room and a patch of carpet the moths had eaten. I also learn about the existence of carpet moths – I thought they only ate clothes up until now.

I feel horrified, Google incessantly, email pest control, spray insane amounts of some lavender thing meant to repel moths and then tuck myself into bed at 9pm.

I manage to stop thinking of moths as we are doing it, doggy style, so I can confirm sex is a viable distraction technique for insect infestations.

Saturday

I spend a busy morning seeing various family members while my husband plays golf with his brother. My hubby is in wonderful spirits, after frequent sex and golf, so agrees to pick our eldest up from a party while I watch The Buccaneers all evening with my younger three. (Bliss!)

Everyone is hyper and up until 10pm. On the plus side, because my husband was on pick-up duty, he is awake and perky past 11pm – an extremely rare occurrence in our household since he gets up at 6am for work most days.

We cuddle and have sex in a position my husband thinks of as ‘the bullfrog’ and I like to call, ‘I’ve put 10 creams on my face so please don’t look at me right now’.

Sunday

We have a fun day taking the kids swimming and playing sports with them. I need my husband to move a giant wardrobe a neighbour pal is giving us for one of our kids’ rooms, so I promise sexual shenanigans in exchange for his physical labour.

(I used to think people who scheduled sex were boring. Now, some of the most enjoyable moments in my marriage involve making dirty, sex-based deals each week.)

We are both snoozy after such a full-on day but before falling asleep, I give my husband half a blow job, followed by a quickie-from-behind in bed.

I wonder if sex has become like exercise for us: something we need for our mental and physical health. Something we enjoy the more we do it.

If we don’t have sex for several days, the atmosphere in the house changes: moods plummet and we’re sharp with one another. Whereas on weeks like this one, we’re the model of a harmonious, chore-splitting, still-kissing-in-public pair.

A couple who’ve been together for years, but still live in separate apartments say it’s the secret to staying in the ‘honeymoon phase’.

After just a few months of dating Shelley Hunt, 40, and Pete Verge, 39, both knew they wanted to see more of each other.

But instead of moving in together, they decided to do something a little different and purchased a property with two apartments.

Four years on, the pair are as loved up as ever and still enjoy living in their separate spaces, with Pete and his three children in the upstairs three-bedroom apartment, and Shelley on the ground floor with her two sons.

They each have their own kitchen and living space and do their own chores, but the two homes are linked by a door and they share a laundry room.

And it’s this room that the pair like sneak off too when they want to spontaneously have sex, while the kids are home.

Shelley Hunt's living area. Photo released November 23 2023. See SWNS story SWNJseperate. A couple say living in separate apartments for four years has kept them in the ?honeymoon phase? ? and they meet in the shared laundry room for sex. Shelley Hunt, 40, and Pete Verge, 39, had only been dating a few months when they found a property with two apartments and decided to buy it together. Now four years on, the pair are still loving the set-up, with Pete living upstairs in a three bedroom and two bathroom suite with his three children ? 11, eight and six. Shelley lives on the ground floor with her two boys ? 15 and 12 ? in a two bedroom and one bathroom suite.

The couple, from Penticton, British Columbia, Canada, claim their unique living arrangement is what’s kept their relationship ‘strong’ and ‘amazing’ over their four years together.

Shelley, who works in community programming, said: ‘Every single person who knows us says we’re the most in love couple.

‘We adore each other. It still feels like we’re in a honeymoon phase.

‘I think our relationship is great. The way we choose to live has contributed massively to the longevity of the love in our relationship and with our kids.

‘I feel so lucky.’

Pete, a business owner also praised their choice to have separate apartments, says that it allows them to ‘focus on the kids’.

And, he adds, as a bonus, they’ll be all set with their own space if for some reason the relationship doesn’t work out.

Shelley agrees that their situation is what’s best for the children, saying: ‘It didn’t feel right for our kids to combine our families. Blending can be scary and uncomfortable.

‘This seemed like a good option. The kids stay in their separate spaces. We know what we’re responsible for. It’s easier to focus on the kids.’

She goes on to describe the two families as ‘ships passing in the night’ but admits she and Pete do share a bed whenever the children are away with their ex-partners.

The pair also regularly have coffee together in the morning and enjoy going on lunchtime walks, but they don’t spend all their time together.

‘We’ll meet in the laundry room. It’s fun and spontaneous,’ says Shelley. ‘By the end of the week we’re dying to spend some time together.

‘It’s nice to miss somebody.’

The mum currently owns 42% of the house and pays $1,400 per month (£815) and Pete owns the remaining 58% – costing him $1,800 a month (£1,048) for the mortgage and all bills.

The couple plan to go travelling together when Pete’s children are old enough to leave home, but for now they’re happy in their separate apartments, as it works ‘incredibly’ well for them.

Pete added: ‘There’s an appreciation for each other when were not together. Our relationship is so special.’

What’s your favourite chocolate in a tub of Quality Street?

If you’re a Green Triangle or Purple One fan, you may be left feeling short-changed.

Stephen Hull, who runs the Inequality Street X (formerly Twitter) account, has been auditing the flavours in Christmas treat tins for the last few years – and it seems there’s still quite a disparity in the varieties included.

Both Stephen and his followers count up how many of each chocolate are in each packet of Roses, Quality Street, Heroes and Celebrations, sharing the results in order to shame manufacturers into action.

With the festive season almost here, results from 2023’s options are starting to come in, leaving many disappointed with the inconsistencies.

When one person carefully examined their £4 box of Quality Street, they found nine Fudges and seven each of the Strawberry Delight, Toffee Finger and Caramel Swirl flavours.

Conversely, there were just four Milk Choc Blocks, Toffee Pennies and Green Triangles, along with five Chocolate Orange Crunches, Purple Ones and Coconut Eclairs.

Another counted just three Green Triangle and Milk Choc Blocks in their tub; paltry in comparison to the seven Strawberry Delights and Fudges they got.

Although some were still reeling about recent changes to the product’s packaging, others couldn’t get over the lack of their favourites.

‘Utter sh**e,’ commented a disgruntled shopper, while others blamed the cost of living crisis or said the situation had ‘ruined [their] Christmas’.

This has been an ongoing issue in the confectionery community, and in 2020 a Quality Street’s manufacturer, Nestlé, explained what was going on.

A spokesperson for the brand told Metro.co.uk: ‘We know that Quality Street fans feel passionately about their favourites, and we have procedures in place to help ensure that each of the 12 varieties are well represented within the mix.

‘And, for those who can’t resist a Caramel Swirl, or who’d love a tin of purely Purple Ones, our website allows you to pick and mix the sweets you love to create your perfect combination.’

What’s your favourite Quality Street chocolate? Have your say in the comments belowComment Now

Every tin of Quality Street is supposed to feature an even mix of three categories: fruit creme, chocolate, and toffee and fudge.

There are more options in the chocolate and toffee categories – meaning fewer of each one – but only two fruit cremes. As a result, you’ll notice Strawberry Delights and Orange Cremes are fairly common.

If you feel your favourites aren’t represented, it may be worth trying John Lewis’s pick-your-own service. Not only can you ensure your top picks are all present and correct, you can also get hold of limited edition flavours that aren’t available anywhere else.

Alternatively, just find someone to palm off the ones you hate on. Isn’t that what Christmas feasting is all about?

What is Black Friday?

Black Friday is an American tradition that starts after Thanksgiving and originated as a one-day event, but now spans over the entire weekend – at the end of November.

It usually starts on the last Friday of the month and continues over to Monday, which is also known as Cyber Monday.

It gives shoppers looking for a bargain the perfect chance to purchase presents for loved ones and pop an item in their baskets for themselves – but at a lower price than usual.

What’s the difference between Black Friday and Cyber Monday?

To be honest? Not that much, but the super sale starts on the Friday – with deals taking place over the weekend, and finishing online (only) Monday.

Historically the best deals for tech items and your traditional home appliances are best on the Friday, whereas smaller items like fashion, beauty and toys are at, sometimes, the lowest price on Monday. It’s also worth noting that as the name suggests, Cyber Monday is only online – so you won’t be able to shop anything else in stores.

So if you’re looking for a new TV, fridge-freezer or just a beauty gift set it might be worth making a note about that, especially if you have multiple people to buy for.

Best shopping tips for Black Friday?

As tempting as it might be, it’s worth having an idea in mind of what you need and want.

Sure, a new pair of shoes, brand new TV and juicer might be splurges you want to purchase – but maybe write down the people you need to buy for, create a budget and look at places that historically are on sale.

It’s also really handy to create a ‘wishlist’ of items you’ve perhaps had your eye on, and see if the price finally goes down over the shopping weekend.

What were the best deals last year, and will they be better this year?

Well as many would say, this year will probably be bigger and better than ever before – at least we’re hoping so for the sake of our wallets.

But with some big brands going live already, there’s already plenty that will wet your sales appetite for sure.

TikTok’s ‘orange peel theory’ is causing break ups — is your relationship safe? https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/23/tiktoks-orange-peel-theory-breaking-relationships-19868360/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/23/tiktoks-orange-peel-theory-breaking-relationships-19868360/#respond Thu, 23 Nov 2023 15:26:18 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19868360
The orange peel theory on TikTok is causing people to break up

TikTok’s ‘orange peel theory’ has a lot of people questioning their relationships – and it’s even left a few break ups in its wake.

The concept is simple: if you partner does something for you, without being asked, that you could do yourself – like, say, peeling an orange – then they love you.

It comes after TikToker Jenna, who goes by @jennaskates, explained how her boyfriend had given her a box of egg whites separated from the yolks

Jenna, who lives to bake, had been telling her boyfriend she struggles to do this task herself due to her long nails.

The small – but very sweet – act, sparked a conversation about the ‘orange peel theory’, with commenters saying it was a perfect example of it.

TikToker Anna Birmingham, who shares relationship and life advice, shared why the theory is so important. She said: ‘Their response is indicative of much bigger things than merely peeling an orange.

‘Even a tiny thing like that can reveal so much about their attitude towards you and your relationship… The small things make up the big things.’

Now, people have been observing the behaviour of their significant others – and it’s been eye opening.

While many have been raving on TikTok about the wonderful little acts of service their significant other does for them, one girl took to Reddit to share her sadness after her boyfriend failed to ‘peel her orange’.

‘I asked him to tie my hair up for me and he looked at me and asked me why I couldn’t do it’, she said. ‘At first I thought that maybe he was intimidated by my long hair, however he has had long hair in the past and knew how to tie it up.

‘I asked him again, thinking it was just a fluke, but he told me that I could do it since I was in the kitchen and he needed to relax stating that he just got off work.’

She went on to say he works from home and he has plenty of energy to play games or go out with his friends.

‘Regardless,’ she added, ‘I honestly didn’t want to break up and thought it was dumb to throw a relationship away over a TikTok, until later in the day when I asked him if he could toss a towel in the dryer so I could be warm when I got out of the shower (since I forgot to do it myself).

‘Surprise surprise, he never did it and it just made me realise how much I do for him and his daughter, who is not even mine – I think I have fed, held, and changed her more than he has.’

She wondered if she was being unreasonable for thinking about ending her relationship over the orange peel theory – but others thought she needed to call time.

One commenter wrote: ‘The real proof of the theory here was that she felt like she needed to perform a test about this theory. When I saw a video about the orange peel theory I thought to myself, “hey that’s true, my partner and I both instantly and happily do little favours for each other all the time!”’.

But it’s not all bad news, other TikTokers who took to the platform to share their positive experiences.

TikToker Alex (@alexmatcha) said her boyfriend gives her her toothbrush in bed when she’s too sleepy, while Kiersten Rae (@kierstenindc) shared her boyfriend always does the dishes for her because he knows she hates doing it.

We’re feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.

Tesco issues one week warning to every Clubcard user in the UK https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/23/tesco-clubcard-warning-uk-rewards-vouchers-19870202/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/23/tesco-clubcard-warning-uk-rewards-vouchers-19870202/#respond Thu, 23 Nov 2023 15:12:18 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19870202&preview=true&preview_id=19870202

Tesco customers have just over one week to use up their Clubcard points – or risk losing them (as well as the subsequent savings) forever.

The supermarket has warned that £16 million worth of Clubcard points are due to expire after November 30, 2023.

So if you’ve been busy racking up points, it would be wise to ensure they don’t go to waste – particularly with Christmas shopping on the horizon.

For those not clued-up, the points – first issued in November 2021 – have to be redeemed within two years.

There are some great savings to be had too, as every 150 points can be exchanged to the value of £1.50 in Tesco stores.

Shoppers can use these Clubcard vouchers in-store and online to save money on their shop.

What’s more, they can also be used to cut the cost of car fuel, on your Tesco Mobile bill, or can even be doubled in value to spend at more than 100 reward partners including Pizza Express and Zizzi.

Emma Botton, Tesco Group customer director, said: ‘We want to help customers’ household budgets stretch further right now and Clubcard is the best way to get great value with Tesco.

‘With more than £16m worth of Clubcard vouchers due to expire at the end of November, we’re reminding customers to spend them now – or even use them to get ahead with some early Christmas shopping.’

If you want to make sure you’re not letting them go to waste, you can find out how many Clubcard points you have in the app by visiting your own account section and selecting statements.

A similar warning came earlier this year when the supermarket warned Tesco customers they had just days to use up their points.

However, the subject of loyalty cards is a point of contention for many – after a recent investigation by consumer group Which? found prices at Tesco and Sainsbury’s often shoot up shortly before discounts for members become available.

A woman bagged a return flight to Romania for a spa trip that was £100 cheaper than what she would have paid in the UK.

Everybody loves a good travel hack and one savvy explorer in search of a wellness trip that wouldn’t break the bank was able to whisk herself away for less than she initially expected.

Rebecca Kellet, 37, and her best pal, Sam Martin, 34, flew from Liverpool John Lennon Airport to Henri Coandă International Airport in Bucharest, Romania at 10am on November 19, 2023.

After flying to Romania on Sunday, they spent the next day getting facials and massages, before travelling back to the UK on Tuesday morning.

Rebecca and Sam then visited the Therme Spa in Bucharest the following day and only had to part ways with £25.85 each for the experience.

Rebecca, a gift company business owner from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, said they always arrange a spa trip to celebrate Sam’s birthday.

Usually the pair go to a place much closer to home in Preston, but Rebecca says that their ‘prices have gone up recently’ and a change in the rules means ‘you don’t get as long in the spa’.

After finding the spa in Romania, Rebecca was also able to book cheap flights.

‘The cost was incredible and the fact that it is a full one-day holiday,’ Rebecca gushed.

‘Usually when you go to a spa you can only get a few hours and here you have the whole day’.

If you’re still on the hunt for a beauty advent calendar to open daily this December 2023, we’ve spotted one that now has 25% off in the Black Friday sale – plus Metro readers can get an exclusive, extra 10% off with a special code.

The 24-day ‘Beauty Treasures’ advent calendar was priced at £94.90 – but now £71.17 in the pre-Black Friday sale.

But how would you like it for even less?

To make your money go further, we’ve managed to secure an early access code that gives you an extra 10% off with METROBF – reducing it to £64.05, and over £30 off!

As retailers prepare themselves for one of the busiest times of the year, Black Friday is almost upon us. Even though the sales extravaganza doesn’t actually start until November 24, there are plenty of brands that have started discounting goods already – including Lumene.

Lumene is the much-loved beauty brand, inspired by Nordic heritage and top-quality natural ingredients – and every day this December, beauty fanatics can look forward to one of either 18 skincare products and six makeup favourites – including Nordic-C [Valo] Overnight Bright Sleeping Cream, which shoppers have called ‘excellent’ and Invisible Illumination Dewy Glow Setting Spray that gives a ‘lovely glow’.

Often we find advent calendars are a great way to try out new beauty brands – without wasting money on skin and haircare products that we might not even like.

If you’ve never heard of Lumene or just fancy treating someone you love to an advent calendar that doesn’t contain chocolate? Then this is perfect.

And it’s not just the Nordic Beauty Treasures Advent Calendar that has 25% off in Lumene’s Black Friday sale, but a whole range of must-have essentials – plus that extra 10% off with METROBF.

Take the Instant Glow Fresh Skin Tint, priced at £27 – down from £36. One ‘busy mum’ has taken to the comments section to rave about this being the ‘best product’.

‘I only have few minutes a day to stand in front of a mirror and make myself look like a decent human being. I’ve spent over a year looking for a routine that would make my skin look good with minimum effort. I can’t praise this product enough!’

She went on to say: ‘My face tone suddenly looks even and fresh, with very even coverage and no clogged visible pores (my pores are like volcanos). As it is a moisturiser and foundation combo means I can apply it straight after washing my face meaning there are only two steps and I’m ready!’

We’re also huge fans of the Liquid Blush in Pink Blossom (was £24.90, now £18.67) here at Metro, and have been for years too! Just like Dua Lipa (sort of) once sang ‘one drop is all it takes’, as this highly pigmented product packs a punch.

It also contains the skin-loving ingredient of Wild Cloudberry, which has twice as much Vitamin C than their weight in oranges!

If Vitamin C is currently your skincare ingredient go-to, then you’ll love the Nordic-C [Valo] range – and particularly the Arctic Berry Oil-Cocktail. Originally priced at £49, now £24.67, skincare fanatics have called this ‘luxury in a bottle’ and a ‘stunning product’. Well that’s us sold…

Just like all good things, this sale at Lumene won’t be on for long – in fact it will all be over on November 27, so make the most of this incredible skincare sale whilst you can (and that early access code of METROBF too).

When are the best Black Friday deals available?

Many brands like to keep their plans top secret until the actual date, but you’ll be pleased to know that quite a few major retailers have already set pre-Black Friday deals live already.

John Lewis, Argos, Currys and Ninja are just a few that have hit the button – tempting customers in with some super savings.

For those who want to wait for a real bargain, there’s not long to go – so why not get a ‘wishlist’ of items together, and avoid disappointment?

Is there something you’re purchasing for yourself or someone else in the Black Friday sale? Perhaps finishing off your Christmas shopping? Let us know what’s on your list in the comments section below.

Savvy period-goers have been bloody loving (sorry) this alternative to the classic menstrual cup.

Whether you’ve been looking to make your time of the month more environmentally friendly, get longer lasting protection, save money over time or enjoy mess-free period sex, nixit’s Menstrual Cup is getting rave reviews from shoppers.

In a unique disk style and made from ultra-soft silicone, the-one-size-fits-all cup is easy to slip in for up to 12 hours of protection – and it’s as easy to put in as it is to empty (trust us, we tried it).

The handy little cup has taken shoppers by storm, with users saying it ‘totally changed my period’, with others calling it a ‘game changer’.

So, naturally, nixit has decided to branch out and offer shoppers a Travel Essentials Kit – an ultra-practical collection that’s set to make travelling and daily life with your nixit an absolute walk in the park. And, is pretty perfect for Christmas gifting.

The set features a water-resistant travel pouch (which is absolutely adorable, btw), a travel-sized wash and individually wrapped wipes for cleaning your cup on the go, and water-based, nixit-friendly lubricant – because that’s the kind of thing you don’t want to be caught without, you know.

shop £28 (save £6)

Consider it a period emergency kit, if you will, that can house everything you need on your period in one place, no matter where you are.

So, whether you’re loading up your gym bag, packing for a holiday or just getting ready to go out for the day, simply chucking it in your bag will mean you have all your nixit essentials handy for when you need them.

And the brand reckons the set is a bloody good (again, sorry) Christmas gift for the nixit users in your life, too.

Rachel Newton, founder of nixit, said: ‘Gifting life-changing period care shouldn’t be seen as taboo and is no more personal than gifting someone a new shade of lipstick. Our products are suitable for vulva-owners of all ages.’

We especially love the brand-new water-resistant travel pouch which makes storing your spare nixit clean and mess-free.

Not tried the nixit menstrual cup for yourself? The disk-shaped cup is a simple yet utterly effective way to take control of your period without pads and tampons- which can end up costing a bomb over time and aren’t great for the environment, either.

nixit menstrual cup

Claiming to hold up to four tampons-worth of flow, the nixit menstrual cup is a disk-shaped cup designed to hold more and feel better than your average cup.Made from ultra soft silicone, the one-size-fits-all cup is easy to slip in for up to 12 hours of protection.

The cup also claims to hold four super-plus tampons worth of flow, which is two times more than a traditional cup, so you can get on with living your life without worrying about your period.

It’s also completely free of chemicals and toxins, crafted from 100% medical grade BPA-free silicone, meaning it won’t dry or disrupt your vagina.

Maybe the best part? Because it slots way up underneath your cervix, it leaves your vaginal canal free for… activities. Messy period sex who? Never heard of her.

And unsurprisingly, shoppers love the nixit, writing: ‘I had been using tampons my entire life and was scared I wouldn’t be able to figure this out. It has been a GAME CHANGER. Just do it, I promise it’ll be the best thing you’ve done for your period. EVER.’

Sainsbury’s shoppers thrilled to see ‘unreal’ Cadbury treat back on shelves https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/23/sainsburys-shoppers-thrilled-return-unreal-cadbury-treat-19867926/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/23/sainsburys-shoppers-thrilled-return-unreal-cadbury-treat-19867926/#respond Thu, 23 Nov 2023 12:47:53 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19867926

It’s been a great week to be a Cadbury fan, with the chocolate giant announcing a brand new bar and an iconic product making a surprise return to shelves ahead of Christmas.

And now another festive favourite is back as shoppers have spotted the ‘incredible’ sweet treat at Sainsbury’s.

The supermarket is once again stocking the Winter Edition of Cadbury Dairy Milk Pots of Joy, and chocolate lovers are thrilled.

The pudding features a Cadbury milk chocolate chilled dessert, topped with a ‘snowy Christmassy layer’ and a pack of four will set you back £2.70 from the retailer.

News of the item’s return was shared on Facebook by NewfoodsUK, who posted: ‘Dairy Milk Winter Edition Pots of Joy Desserts are back at Sainsbury’s.’

Hundreds of people liked the post, with many flocking to the comments to share their excitement at being able to get their hands on the product again.

One person replied: ‘I love these’, while another said: ‘These are lush’. A number of people tagged their mates, urging them to give the dessert pots a go for themselves.

Another chocoholic branded the dessert ‘a bit of heaven’, while someone else thought they were ‘unreal’.

Those who plan to head to Sainsbury’s to purchase the puds, may also be interested to hear that the supermarket has recently brought back a popular loyalty scheme just in time for Christmas.

Some Sainsbury’s Nectar card holders will be able to double up their points under the latest offer — but you’ll need to be quick as the promotion ends this Friday (November 24).

Known as the Points Power Up, the scheme allows shoppers to double the value of their points.

Nectar points are currently worth 0.5p each, meaning that earning 2,000 points can get you a tenner to spend in store. But under this new scheme, that same 2,000 would get you £20 to spend instead.

However, the trial offer isn’t available to everyone, and (annoyingly) it isn’t clear which Nectar customers are eligible. According to MoneySavingExpert.com, the scheme will be open to more than 100,000 of customers, and you need at least 2,000 points to take part.

The move comes after Sainsbury’s axed its Nectar Connect scheme, which allowed customers to link their bank account to their Nectar card, collecting more points in the process.

As we’ve seen with recent surges in sausage dogs, pugs and spaniels, the popularity of dog breeds can fluctuate as the years go on.

So this means that certain breeds become more in-demand while others go down in numbers – and some can even be at risk of disappearing completely.

And, according to the Kennel Club’s annual list, a breed that previously used to be a popular dog in the UK may now be at ‘risk of extinction’.

Numbers for the Wire Fox Terrier are rapidly depleting, meaning it’s set to be ‘at risk’ for the first time ever.

It’s a breed many will recognise as ‘Snowy’ from the TinTin franchise, but despite being a firm favourite of the Edwardian Era – with both King Edward VII and Queen Victoria both reported to have owned a Wire Fox Terrier – interest has recently dwindled.

So, while the Wire Fox Terrier was a popular dog in the UK 100 years’ ago, today is a different story.

Annual numbers of Wire Fox Terrier puppies have rapidly declined, with just 281 born in the first three quarters of this year – a 21% decrease from last year’s 359 puppies.

This means it could soon join Kennel Club’s ‘At Watch’ breeds, which looks at those with between 300-450 puppy births a year.

Plus, it would be a another devastating blow as various terriers make up the majority of the list already.

Dog breeds - At Watch list:

  • Bedlington Terrier
  • Bullmastiff
  • Jack Russell Terrier
  • Irish Terrier
  • Norfolk Terrier
  • Parson Russell Terrier
  • Old English Sheepdog
  • Welsh Terrier

The recent news prompted Bill Lambert, a spokesperson for the Kennel Club, to warn there was a ‘real danger’ the beloved terrier could be lost forever.

It’s worth pointing out that breeds with less than 300 puppy registrations each year are noted on the company’s Vulnerable Native Breed list. The 34 ‘at risk’ dogs currently featured on it include the English Setter, Bloodhound, Irish Wolfhound, Skye Terrier and the Welsh Corgi.

The full list can be found below.

Eshita Kabra, Founder and CEO of By Rotation said of the campaign: ‘By Rotation is thrilled to partner with Lidl this festive season by adding Lidl’s Christmas jumpers to our shared wardrobe on the app.

‘With Christmas being one of the top occasions of the year when the demand for purchasing single-wear outfits skyrockets, renting a festive jumper for your holiday season plans is a great way to leave a positive impact on the planet and also save money!’

Lydia Bolton, Slow Fashion Designer, added: ‘I’ve loved being a part of Lidl’s Christmas iconic jumper campaign. Designing and producing these jumpers inspired by Christmas icons from second-hand textiles has been super fun and creative, but knowing they are going to be rented and re-worn also supports my mission of valuing and reusing textiles.’

Christmas in London, Regent St angels
London has been revealed to have the best Christmas lights in Europe (Picture: Getty Images)

While the evenings keep on getting darker, we don’t mind so much if it means we get to enjoy dazzling Christmas light displays.

From giant baubles, angels and of course, sparkling Christmas trees, they’re festive, fun and, more often than not, free.

And now, the best Christmas light displays in Europe have been crowned, and it was our capital city that came out on top.

Yes, really! From the Oxford Street stars to Carnaby Street’s neon solar system strung up, London was the best overall city for Christmas light displays.

The Regent Street lights were also crowned the top light display in Europe, with four other London spots also making the top 10.

It shouldn’t really come as a surprise that the city shines the brightest at Christmas time, after all, it was also just revealed to be the world’s prettiest Christmas city, beating New York and Paris to claim the top spot.

The research, by ferry and cruise operator DFDS, used TikTok data to determine where the best light displays in Europe were, compiling a list of places that have garnered the most posts and likes on the video-sharing app.

London was the clear winner, with five of the city’s festive installations making it into the top 10, with the iconic Regent Street angels coming in at number one, thanks to a whopping 2.3 million views on TikTok.

The angels were closely followed by the Covent Garden Christmas lights in second place with 1.4 million views. This year the spectacular display features over 40 giant bells with bows, 12 giant baubles and eight spinning mirror balls.

Also on the list was Oxford Street in fifth, with Carnaby Street in eighth place and Christmas at Kew rounding out the top 10.

Other noteworthy European light displays that made the cut included Christmas at the Botanics in Edinburgh, the George Square Christmas lights in Glasgow, and Bahnhofstrasse street in Zurich.

The research also included a list of Europe’s top 10 overall best cities to visit for Christmas light displays. London was of course at number one, but other high ranking cities included Barcelona, Paris, Lisbon, Vienna, and Budapest.

Top 10 best Christmas light displays in Europe

  1. Regent Street Christmas lights, London, 2,300,000 views
  2. Christmas in Covent Garden, London, 1,400,000 views

There are also plenty of cute Christmas markets you can peruse to find the perfect gifts for your loved ones.

Woman shocked to learn the ‘truth’ about black pepper — and we’re confused https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/23/woman-shocked-learn-truth-black-pepper-19867226/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/23/woman-shocked-learn-truth-black-pepper-19867226/#respond Thu, 23 Nov 2023 11:09:28 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19867226

Her world has been turned upside down (Picture: Getty Images/iStockphoto)

We can all admit that there are some food-related things we really should know but when it comes down to it, we’re actually complete novices.

Whether it’s the true ingredients of classic dipping sauces or how chicken nuggets are made, there’s always something new to learn.

However, there are some discoveries that are truly shocking because they’re just so unexpected – and for one woman a simple kitchen staple will never be the same again.

The anonymous woman shared her recent revelation about black pepper on Mumsnet. But, to be frank, her theory doesn’t make much sense.

Her viral post reads: ‘I just learnt that black pepper is NOT made from the dried seeds of bell peppers… I’m really surprised. I wonder what else I think I “know” which is wrong’.

Judging by the comments in the thread, it seems she was the only person who made such a connection.

One commenter responded with: ‘But, but, they don’t even look the same!’

Another confused person shared: ‘I can’t understand how you were ever confused about this!’

Other Mumsnet users expressed sympathy and defended the woman’s innocent confusion over pepper. One person added: ‘Considering we don’t grow these things ourselves it’s not surprising, though. I’ve never seen a peppercorn plant either, just googled and they’re so cool!’

The black pepper we sprinkle on our dishes to give them an added kick of spice is made from peppercorn. So, perhaps the connection the Mumsnet user tried to make stemmed from the fact that paprika is made from dried red peppers that have been ground to a fine powder.

Have you been shocked after learning the true ingredients of a dish? Share your thoughtsComment Now

‘Wait until you discover what paprika is,’ someone teased in the comments. ‘Your mind will be blown.’

Someone else wrote: ‘But did you know that paprika is made from the dried skin of bell peppers? I didn’t until I was about 40. Maybe you did and that was confusing you.’

But the original poster (OP) replied and clarified: ‘When you cut a pepper open there are little seeds. I thought black pepper was those seeds dried out. I’ve known what paprika is for about 15 years now.’

The more you know…

I could have sworn he gave a little smile; and then, he really was gone (Picture: Morgan Pike)

As I got on the train from Mansfield to Kendal, I was shaking.

In January 2022, I was 25-years-old and on my way to start work as a live-in carer for Bill, a 96-year-old man living with Alzheimer’s.

I’d never been more nervous. I’m generally not good with new people and this was the first time I’d left my family but I knew this was something I had to do.

When I walked into Bill’s house, he tried to stand up despite being shaky on his feet. I told him to settle back down and gave him a strong handshake instead.

‘Do you like Snooker?’ He said with a smile, and I was instantly put at ease. I could do this.

I lived with Bill for nine months – and that caring experience changed my life.

The first time I wanted to properly care for someone else was when I was about 14 and my grandad was very ill with cancer.

He was my first best friend and I wanted to do something to help but I was too young to do anything except nip to the shop. I felt helpless.

When he passed, I was devastated. A year later I left school to work in a factory with my dad doing embroidery – putting any thoughts of becoming a carer on the backburner.

After 10 years working with family though I decided to revisit the idea and applied for a local caring community job.

A photo of Bill in his armchair, he is wearing a brown and grey cardigan, and grey shirt. He has glasses and is smiling to camera
He was a very quiet, calm and collected man (Picture: Morgan Pike)

Everything happened quite quickly after that. I completed three weeks of training, did a day and a half of shadowing shifts and then, I was out on my own.

For the first couple of years I worked for various caring community companies.

My day started at around 7 in the morning and I would care for around 16 or 17 people until my shift ended at 10pm – though more often than not I worked overtime.

I never minded the long hours though. So long as when I walked out the client had a smile on their face then I was happy.

Then in 2021 I decided to apply for a live-in carer job – mainly to give myself a new challenge – and that’s when I met Bill.

He was a very quiet, calm and collected man and had spent the past couple years caring for his late wife through the pandemic. Sadly this meant his dementia had gone undiagnosed for a long time.

In fact, he’d only been properly diagnosed after he ended up in London when he said he was ‘popping to the shops’.

And finally, an anonymous bridesmaid recounts being subjected to constant demands by her bridezilla friend. She was left ghosted and with massive bills to pay.

Now, Bill needed help at home and that was where I came in.

When I first arrived, Bill’s dementia was probably in the middle stages; how he felt just depended on the day.

Some days he didn’t want to have a laugh or speak at all, but on the days he did, we had fun together. He became like another grandad to me.

We cooked together and he taught me all about snooker which I never thought I’d like, but soon we always made sure to watch it together. He even tried getting me into boules, but given that I was only 25 it didn’t quite stick.

In June, he got very unsteady and was in bed for two days. I called the doctor who advised him to stay in bed – and he never really made it out again.

We continued to watch snooker on a little tablet I placed on his over-the-counter table and I was generally very hopeful that he’d be here for a while.

‘He’s going to make it till 100 and we’ll be living together for a long time’. I’d tell myself. But it didn’t pan out that way.

Soon, Bill wasn’t eating or drinking, so I had to wet his lips with a flannel, and though he’d always been a man of few words – he never said a lot and a smile or a hand hold said it all – he became practically non-verbal.

Then, his toes went black, at which point the doctor said it would be a matter of days.

Bill’s daughter came back from Spain, where she was living, to be there for him at the end and truly it was heart wrenching to witness.

Morgan taking a selfie with Bill, who is sitting in an armchair and wearing a brown and grey cardigan, and grey shirt. He has glasses and is smiling to camera

One night, I went to get a couple of hours’ sleep but at 4:00am, his daughter knocked on the door and said, ‘He’s gone’.

I came downstairs to say my goodbye’s and as I went to give him a kiss on his forehead, he took his last breath which scared the living daylights out of me.

‘Ooh, you bugger, you always have to have the last laugh!’ I said. I could have sworn he gave a little smile; and then, he really was gone.

The nine months I spent with Bill changed me, and my life, forever.

Right now though, I’m living in a pub with my best friend but I’m still working for a caring company, too. But I try to apply my caring mentality to everything I do.

It’s not always easy and I have a tendency to try and fix everybody I meet, even people who are beyond help, but I wouldn’t change that because I do get through to a lot of people.

I recently completed an 8.5 km Alzheimer’s Society Memory Walk in his memory and he’s the reason I will never stop trying to make a difference to those living with dementia.

It’s a nasty, horrible disease and that’s why I try my hardest to work with people who have it.

Bill always remembered who I was right until the end, and I’ll never forget him or how he changed my life.

Alzheimer’s Society vows to end the devastation caused by dementia, providing help and hope for everyone affected. For more information or to make a donation, visit http://Alzheimers.org.uk

Baby names can be a tricky topic – we might love different ones to our partner and we may hate the ones chosen by our friends

This is the predicament one woman has found herself in, after her pregnant friend revealed what she intends on calling her baby.

Sharing her story on Reddit, the poster says: ‘One of my friends found out she was pregnant a few months ago, and she’s really excited to be a mother. I’m happy for her and think she’d make a good mom, but there’s one problem; she wants her baby’s name to be unique and special, but the way she’s going about it is terrible. What I mean is, the name she plans on using is godawful.’

The poster goes on to say that her friend has two different name options: one for a boy and another for a girl.

She continues: ‘If it’s a boy, she’s going to name him “Daynger” (yes, spelled like that to be unique), and if it’s a girl, she’s going to name her “Tinkerbelle”. I wish I was joking.’

The poster says she asked her pregnant pal if she was 100% sure and even instead suggested she make them middle names – but her friend was insistent.

The Reddit post continues: ‘When she asked why, I told her flat out that the child would get bullied if she named them that. I know just how sh*tty kids can be; I got bullied for my name, and changed it when I was 19.

‘She got really upset and told me I was being unsupportive and I was a sh*tty friend. She’s been ignoring my texts ever since, and it’s been more than a week. I’m starting to feel kind of guilty over what I said.’

Now the woman has found herself in an awkward situation and has asked the platform if she was in the wrong for being honest with her friend.

But most of Reddit agrees she’s done the right thing.

Someone replied: ‘She needs a reality check. She’s naming adults here. Those names won’t set her kids up for their best shot at life and she needs to accept that.’

What are your thoughts on these unusual baby names? Share your opinions below.Comment Now

While another said: ‘I’m so sick of people assuming that anyone who disagrees with them is “unsupportive”. Being a supportive friend does not mean being a yes-man, it means having your friends best interests at heart. You do want your friend and her child to be happy, therefore you are the most supportive.

‘Any name should fill a person with confidence as people keep having to introduce themselves again and again throughout their life.’

It’s easy to let the small things slide (Picture: Getty Images)

Are you really in your happy relationship, or are you just settling?

It’s a thought that may have crossed your mind at some point or another in a previous relationship, or maybe even with your current partner.

Well, if you’re unsure, Kristina Virro, a psychotherapist and couple’s therapist from Ontario, spoke on TikTok about the six things that truly happy couples do in their relationships.

‘There are six small things happy couples do based on my experience as a couple’s therapist,’ said Kristina.

‘I say these things are small but I genuinely believe that the accumulation of them makes a big impact on a relationship.’

It seems it really is the little things that matter.

Happy couples create moments of micro connection
Moments of micro connection are important (Picture: Getty Images)

The first tell-tale sign that Kristina mentions is creating ‘micro moments of connection’.

‘This could be giving each other a good morning kiss or giving each other a hug before the other person leaves for work,’ she said.

The second indicator is if you ask your significant other how their day has been.

She adds: ‘It’s really easy to forget to check in on one another when you just get lost in the hustle and bustle of life.’

This could be particularly true if you live together and sometimes take each other’s time for granted.

Number three is a big one, and you may be guilty of neglecting a time or two: active listening.

‘This means giving your undivided attention, asking questions and putting away your phone – huge impact,’ Kristina said.

This is so important for our mental health and connection that the British Heart Foundation even lists top tips for how to actively listen.

These include: facing the speaker and holding eye contact, listening to non-verbal cues like facial expressions, tone of voice and gestures, not interrupting, asking questions based on what is said and repeating what they’ve said to show them you were really listening.

This is key to any relationship, as Kristina shares that ‘closed mindedness and an unwillingness to turn inward’ can mean your relationship is doomed.

The fourth thing truly happy couples do is ‘giving each other loving attention and physical attention outside of sex’, according to Kristina.

These include ‘things like hand holding, back scratches and playing with your partner’s hair’.

‘Number five is showing appreciation. “Thank you for unloading the dishwasher today”, “thank you for picking our son up from school”,’ Kristina said.

‘It’s just about creating a loving, kind culture in your home.’

Last but certainly not least, happy couples will do ‘thoughtful things from a place of generosity’.

Actively listening to each other and physical touch are big musts

‘Bring your partner a cup of coffee in the morning, leave them a little love note,’ Kristina added.

She also shared more ways you can create moments of connection with your partner.

One way is to take joint work breaks if you both work from home, to allow you to spend time together.

Complimenting your partner may seem like an obvious one, but Kristina says the more specific the compliment the better.

And lastly, sending a simple ‘thinking of you’ text during the day is another way to show your partner you really care.

What’s on in London this week: Best pre-theatre menus and alfresco drinks https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/23/london-this-week-pre-theatre-menus-winter-terraces-19863890/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/23/london-this-week-pre-theatre-menus-winter-terraces-19863890/#respond Thu, 23 Nov 2023 10:30:22 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19863890
Fuime/ Velvet Pines/ Stanley's
Some festive ideas for chilly November evenings (Picture: Fuime/ Velvet Pines/ Stanley’s)

Welcome back to the Slice, your weekly guide to what’s on in London.

We might not love the fact that the sun set at 4pm today, but we’re definitely using it as an excuse to start our nights out earlier than ever.

That means three bargain courses before a West End show, alfresco drinks with friends cosied up under sheepskins, evening walks through illuminated gardens and… a dinner dance with a yeti?

The night is still young…

The Slice’s Pick

Velvet Pines

Velvet Pines
Is that a yeti on stage? (Picture: Velvet Pines)

Neither the blistering indoor blizzard nor the snow-capped entrance to a 1970s ski lodge can prepare you for a night at Velvet Pines. This immersive dining experience begins in the hotel bar (complete with staff plucked from Fawlty Towers), before leading you upstairs to the grand chalet-inspired dining hall.

Expect hilarious songs and performances throughout your meal and even… a dancing yeti?! It is absolutely daft but a fantastic laugh; the actors, the music and the set design understand the brief and then some. Sadly, the food is quite disappointing for the price, so if that is a concern we recommend saving yourself £55 by keeping to the cabaret seating. For that price, you are unlikely to find a more fun, bonkers, feel-good Christmas experience this holiday season.

Until 23 December. Tickets from £35 (non-dining) and £90 (3 course dining). 47- 49 Tanner Street, London.

Food & Drink

Stanley’s Chelsea

Stanley's Chelsea
Stanley’s has had a festive makeover (Picture: Stanley’s Chelsea)

by Jeremy Ullmann

More elegant than a pub, and more relaxing than a high-end bar, Stanley’s Chelsea is a West London oasis with exceptionally good food. The courtyard’s charming decor adapts to the changing seasons (it’s currently festooned with frosted foliage for winter) and manages to pull off a ‘too good to Instagram’ atmosphere, asking you to just sit back and enjoy.

And the food, oh the food. Everything is cooked, seasoned and presented to perfection. Dishes like the crab crumpet and the ham croquettes have no business being as spectacular as they are, while the mains’ flavours are blended with a staggering level of confidence by the talented chefs. Food this good, at this price, doesn’t come around often.

Small plates from £4, mains from £19. 151 Sydney Street, Chelsea.

Fiume

Cocktails at Fiume

by Rob Buckhaven

I don’t go to Battersea Power Station enough. If I had, I’d have clocked Fiume, the Italian eatery that’s part of the D&D Group. You know, Quaglino’s and Bluebird? I was lured in by Fiume’s Sicilian winter terrace, in collaboration with Italicus Rosalio di Bergamotto, the Italian liqueur based around bergamot. This Christmas terrace comes with a bespoke cocktail menu, I’d recommend the Grande Eleganza for Bergamotto blended with Malfy Gin, or the Negroni Bianco, a sweeter take on a Negroni. Soak them up with a host of tasty plates, then scootch over to the high-end shops next door for some window-licking.

Cocktails from £10. Circus West, Battersea Power Station.

Luci

Escape the busyness of Covent Garden, dim the lights, turn on some slow music, and here enters the mushroom and truffle risotto – creamy, earthy and with a hint of garlic. Each dish from this intimate Italian restaurant is simple yet delicious with the right amount of punch – plus, they don’t shy on the portions. We’d particularly recommend the seafood and homemade focaccia.

Mains from £14. 136 Long Acre, Covent Garden.

BEST ROMANTIC: Hovarda

Dining room at Hovarda Soho
A date night spot with sensational food (Picture: Horvarda)

The best date night in London is dinner and a show, and the table should be booked at Hovardo. Emerald tiles and sleek table lamps set the scene for three exquisite Greek acts comprising (among other delights) velvety, honey-ed feta wrapped in crisp phyllo strands, tender, delicate stonebass, and rich pistachio Kataifi. We won’t judge you for eating off each other’s spoons.

2 courses £24.50, 3 courses £29.50, Tues – Sat 5pm to 7pm. 36 – 40 Rupert St, Soho.

BEST VALUE: Paro

Trays of curry and Indian dishes at Paro
An excellent value feast of classic Indian dishes (Picture: Paro)

A high-octane show like The Lion King needs a big dinner to fuel it, and you don’t have to go far to find one. The newly-opened Paro sits underneath the Lyceum, dishing up three huge courses of classic Anglo-Indian fare (go for the Bang Bang chicken and sweet Chicken Korma). Poppadums at £1.50 a pop are worth it for the sauces. It’s not fancy, but you will be full.

2 courses £19, 3 courses £22, 11.45am – 6.30pm daily. Lyceum Theatre, 21 Wellington St, Covent Garden.

BEST GLAM: Bocconcio Soho

With its array of golden lamps, glitzy marble bar, and dough-flipping pizza chefs, it’s clear that Bocconcino was made for the stage, dah-ling. The new Soho branch leans into its Theatreland surroundings with a pre-(or post!) show menu boasting Italian favourites like beef carpaccio, homemade pappardelle with wild mushrooms and stracciatella, and Sicilian cannolo.

McDonald's festive menu taste test
We put McDonald’s new festive menu to the test (Picture: GETTY/ metro.co.uk)

McDonald’s Christmas menu is finally back in stores, but not all dishes are created equal.

To see what’s made the naughty or nice list this year, the team here at Metro.co.uk tried to lot, to give you the lowdown before you splash your hard-earned cash.

The menu includes the return of the iconic Chicken Big Mac, alongside some new contenders including the Big & Cheesy burger (with option to add bacon), Cheese Melt Dippers (stuffed with Camembert and served with a tomato dip), and a new Chicken Combo option with 10 Chicken Selects. Nugget fans will also be racing to try the 20 Chicken McNugget sharebox with four select dips and four standard dips.

To finish off your festive meal at Maccies with something sweet, there are Galaxy Chocolate or Caramel McFlurries with chocolate stars and sauce or a Galaxy Caramel Pie that features crispy chocolate pastry and a Galaxy Caramel sauce.

And while this new pie sounds pretty tempting, many were outraged over its introduction as it meant that an iconic Christmas staple got the boot this year.

Here’s how we got on with our big taste test.

The Big & Cheesy, £5.49 (single), £7.29 (meal)

Rating: 2.5/5

Rachel holding The Big & Cheesy burger box
Rachel wasn’t overly impressed with the new burger (Picture: Metro)

Rachel says: ‘The Big & Cheesy does what it says on the packet. Yes it’s big. Yes it’s cheesy. But is it Christmassy? Not in the slightest.

‘The “snowflake flour” dusted on the bun is the only nod to the festive season but feels surplus to requirement. If anything, it takes away from the cheap and cheerful flavour of Maccie D’s bread that we all know and love.

‘Supposedly this burger comes with crispy onions, but that’s news to me. There are plenty of red onions though, too many for my personal taste, in fact. Still, it fills a hole at lunchtime for a bargain price, leaving spare change for Christmas shopping. It’s nothing noteworthy, but it delivers on the basics.’

Galaxy Chocolate McFlurry, £1.49 (mini), £1.99 (regular)

Rating: 3/5

Alice with the Galaxy Chocolate McFlurry
Alice didn’t think the Galaxy Chocolate McFlurry was overly festive (Picture: Metro)

Alice says: ‘What to say about the Galaxy Chocolate McFlurry… hmmm. It almost doesn’t warrant a review. It’s literally the exact same as a regular Galaxy McFlurry apart from the fact the chocolate pieces are shaped like stars. I’m guessing that’s what is meant to make this festive?

‘Was it sugary and tasty and chocolatey — absolutely. Will I buy it after a festive drunk night out? Of course. But as for it being a special Christmas menu addition, there’s nothing new or exciting about it.’

The Big & Cheesy with Bacon, £6.29 (single), £8.09 (meal)

Rating: 3.5/5

Courtney holding up the Big & Cheesy with Bacon
The new Big & Cheesy with Bacon (Picture: Metro)

Courtney says: ‘As a lover of all things cheese, I had high hopes for a burger called the Big & Cheesy and while I feel the size of this didn’t quite live up to the name (it’s decent, but it’s got nothing on the Big Mac), McDonald’s certainly made up for what was lacking when it came to the cheese.

‘This burger contains not one but two slices of cheese and the filling is also topped with a cheese sauce just for good measure. I was initially concerned that there didn’t seem to be much sauce inside, but it seems a little goes a long way in this case, as it’s very cheesy. The flavour was just right for me, not too artificial tasting and not too strong either. A rather mild cheese taste, but tasty nonetheless.

‘But along with the good, there were a few negatives. The Big & Cheesy with bacon is meant to contain crispy onions and red onion, but mine was just chock full of the latter which I wasn’t very keen on, although that’s just personal preference.

‘And while I do like to tuck into a cheese board or two over the holiday season, this cheesy burger just didn’t feel super festive. I’m not sure if a turkey and cranberry burger would work, but it could be fun to see McDonald’s whip up something new using more traditional Christmas ingredients next year.’

Chicken Big Mac, £4.79 (single) £6.59 (meal)

Rating: 4/5

Ross tucking into the Chicken Big Mac
The Chicken Big Mac was a winner (Picture: Metro)

Ross says: ‘I initially worried that the Chicken Big Mac would be too much carb-on-carb, and that’s coming from someone who once had spaghetti bolognese on top of a pizza. But it actually works really well, the Big Mac sauce surprisingly goes better with chicken than their mayo does – but I just didn’t think it needed the cheese slice. I know that might offend Big Mac purists but it would work much better without cheese.’

Cheese Melt Dippers, £2.59 (single), £6.89 (sharebox)

Rating: 4/5

Tanyel holding a Cheese bite
The cheese bites are perfect for a post-night out snack! (Picture: Metro)

Tanyel says: ‘You can’t go wrong with cheese bites – if you like cheese and a tomato dip, you’ll like these. But do they taste of camembert? Absolutely not. If I really think about it, I do get a slight richer creaminess than a regular cheese bite, but ultimately it just tastes like mozzarella. The flavour is good, so it still gets a 4 out of 5, but it doesn’t actually taste like what it’s meant to.

‘For a post-night out snack in Christmas party season, these go down a treat.’

Galaxy Caramel McFlurry, £1.49 (mini), £1.99 (regular)

Rating: 4/5

Courtney holding the Galaxy Caramel McFlurry
The Galaxy Caramel McFlurry was a hit with Courtney (Picture: Metro)

Courtney says: ‘I love ice cream and I love Galaxy Caramel, so this McFlurry was a winner for me! Some may argue it’s not the most festive choice of chocolate for this menu, but you do get mini Galaxy Caramel sweets in tubs of Celebrations at Christmas, so that’s good enough for me.

‘Plus I’m a sucker for anything that’s a cute shape, so the chocolate stars on top were right up my street. It’s not groundbreaking or particularly innovative as far as desserts go, but if it ain’t broke don’t fix it… and thanks to all that’s holy that on this occasion our local Maccies’ McFlurry machines weren’t broken!’

Galaxy Caramel Pie, £1.99

Rating: 5/5

Courtney holding McDonald's Galaxy Caramel Pie
The Galaxy Caramel Pie was the clear standout from the new menu (Picture: Metro)

Courtney says: ‘Ok, I’m going to confess something that might be controversial, but I’ve never been a fan of McDonald’s pies. I just didn’t get them. But that’s all about to change because this Galaxy Caramel pie might just be the best thing I’ve ever eaten from McDonald’s. And I’m not even exaggerating. The chocolate pastry is wonderfully crisp and the deep fried taste makes me think of hot doughnuts from the seaside. Add in the caramel sauce and the whole thing is just a dream for anyone with a sweet tooth.

‘Definitely get one of these before they are gone! I know I’ll be going back for more…’

If you want that false lash effect and thick brows that would make Cara Delevingne question whether she’d over-plucked, you need this serum that’s an absolute steal right now thanks to Black Friday.

Whether you fell victim to the early noughties over-plucking trend or until TikTok, thought that picking at your mascara and wiping off the remnants with a cucumber face wipe was a successful skincare regime, you’re probably eager to get those lashes longer and those brows a-bushing.

And this lash and brow gift set from Grande Cosmetics has been hailed ‘a dream’ and ‘must have’ for its results on brows and lashes by impressed shoppers, should you want all products in one place.

So what’s in these wonders that aims to help your lashes and brows grow so rapidly?

Well, firstly, the GrandeLASH-MD Lash Enhancing Serum has a blend of vitamins, peptides, and amino acids that aim to boost the appearance of thicker lashes in just four to six weeks, according to the brand, and create a total transformation in three months.

So you can be fluttering those lashes over Christmas dinner and practically create your own wind with them by early spring.

Did we mention the brand currently has 30% off products from now until November 27? So even if the gift set sells out (which we predict it will) you can still snag some savings on the viral products.

When it comes to GrandeBROW, it not only aims to help fill out your brows like a traditional brow gel but it contains a conditioning formula that aims to strengthen the appearance of brows.

And you also get the Conditioning and Peptide Mascara that’s enriched with the good stuff to help keep the lashes luscious.

One customer revealed they had been getting showered with compliments after using the products, adding: ‘I have used this product the past few weeks and I have gotten so many compliments on my lashes and brows! As someone who has thin lashes, they have a thicker look to them now. It has also helped create full thicker looking brows!’

Another echoed their statement, adding: ‘I now get compliments on my eyelashes almost daily!’

'The product is worth every penny'

One customer described it as the perfect holiday gift, saying: ‘This duo is probably the best thing you can give in the holidays. The serums make a difference and the mascara leaves your eyelashes looking so voluminous and pretty.’

Plus, in the Black Friday sale, you can get a jammy saving on this set as it’s only £69.00, as opposed to £131.00 for all products.

Seriously, what more could you need? Big brows, fluttering lashes and great savings? The ultimate trifecta.

While the products have received a ton of praise for their positive results, some users have reported suffering irritation and even discolouration on their lids. Some have also claimed they’ve suffered periorbital fat loss, or fat loss around the eyes. The brand previously said sensitivity with their products is rare but did suggest customers only use every 1 to 12 days at first before moving to daily use.

Grande Cosmetics also said in a statement: ‘We’ve invested in rigorous independent third-party laboratory testing to ensure its safety, including the following:

• Industry standard RIPT testing has included that when used as directed, GrandeLASH-MD
does not present potential for dermal irritation or allergic contact sensitization.
• Ophthalmologist testing has concluded that it is safe for use with contacts and lash extensions.
• HET-CAM testing has graded its irritation potential at the lowest possible rating scale: none to slight.’

Doctor… who? How AI is already shaping the NHS  https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/23/ai-already-shaping-nhs-19864402/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/11/23/ai-already-shaping-nhs-19864402/#respond Thu, 23 Nov 2023 08:00:00 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19864402
Medical technology concept

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the new tech trend that is on everyone’s lips. We can thank OpenAI’s ChatGPT platform for that, as this generative AI tool has taken the public by storm thanks to its simple, fun, and easy-to-use functionality.

AI has captured the UK’s imagination to such an extent that it is now influencing university admissions.

UCAS chief executive Clare Marchant says that 2023’s data shows that applications to study computing were up almost 10% compared to 2022, with 95,000 students applying for computing and AI-related courses.

And the government, too, is firmly behind the potential AI has to offer, with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announcing in October that he intends to set up a body that will investigate AI risks.

Is AI the future of healthcare?

Given all that, it’s not too much of a stretch to imagine a future where AI will be used in hospitals and healthcare settings for a whole host of tasks, like X-ray and MRI analyses, cancer detection, or to transcribe medical documents.

That’s a while away though, right? Actually, not so fast: the truth is that these are all happening right now, with plenty more to come in the future.

Where logic meets illusion
AI innovation is already happening (Picture: Getty Images)

The NHS says it sees AI as a ‘key element in digital transformation “to help clinicians in applying best practice, eliminate unwarranted variation across the whole pathway of care, and support patients in managing their health and condition”’.

On the way are even more high-tech innovations. Think wearable devices like smart health monitors with the ability to provide accurate and personalised diagnoses on your wellbeing.

And because AI is so good at analysing huge amounts of data, it can be used to spot patterns – such as a new virus, or addiction patterns in communities, for example – which may take longer to be picked up by humans.

People are rightfully concerned about the ethical implications of using artificial intelligence for medicine, pointing out that AI models can be flawed, which could pose risks to patient safety.

While those issues are worked out and proper oversight is put in place, it’s still a good idea for healthcare professionals to look to the future and see how AI may not only affect their own role, but also how it can augment it.

Slack’s recent State of Work Report 2023 found that 83% of UK workers think AI and automation will make for more impactful work, and when it comes to fears over whether it will take your job entirely, economist Richard E. Baldwin, a professor of international economics at the IMD Business School, says it best.

‘AI won’t take your job, it is somebody using AI that will take your job,’ he said recently.

It’s food for thought, no matter what industry you work in. And if you’d like to ensure that you’re on an upward trajectory in your career, a job move can provide you with a fresh perspective, as well as updated skills.

The Metro Job Board is a great place to start your search, containing thousands of healthcare roles all across the UK, such as the three below.
