You might think you need to take out a second mortgage if you want to spend a day in London’s fancy old Knightsbridge quarter – but if you’re super-savvy with your cash, turns out you can have a great day living it up like a local.

So if it’s a place you’ve either avoided because you thought it was only for people who drive supercars and drip with jewellery, then think again.

Not only can you pop into Harrods for lunch and still come out with change from a tenner (thanks to their £7 sandwiches from the Roast and Bake takeaway), but there are so many hidden hot spots to enjoy without breaking the bank. 

Here’s how I did it…

Walk it baby

The best way to explore Knightsbridge is to first take a detour away from the iconic Brompton Road and explore the side streets.

Of course, knowing where to start is always a good thing, which is why the Knightsbridge partnership has just launched an interactive map which gives a tour of neighbourhood and must see-highlights, from the beautiful Mandarin Oriental and Bulgari hotels, to tourist must-sees like Wellington Arch, Jane Austen’s blue plaque and the historical Brompton Oratory.

Another gem to discover off the beaten track is the The Map House, which offers a beautifully presented history and geography lesson on London and beyond, through their 10,000-odd maps. Visitors are more than welcome to browse rather than buy, too.

Meanwhile, if you need a quick coffee-stop but don’t want to pay a fortune for a flat white, the Co. London is a great side street shout, with a lattes coming in at £3.50.

It’s also worth considering that if there’s a group of you going and you want to do some touristing without the usual clichés, then hiring a Blue Badge Tourist Guide could be an option. Sophie Campbell really knows her stuff – from sharing stories of how yesterday’s hay stables became today’s must have loft apartments, to the spooky tale behind the Grenadier pub’s ceiling covered in bank notes. Get a group of 10 of you together and a half day – 4 hours walk – costs around £28 each. 

Clothes shopping in Harrods – but not as you know it

While it’s all great and lovely if you can afford the likes of Christian Louboutin and Alexander McQueen, but also hidden away on the fourth floor of London’s most glitzy deparment store is the most amazing budget-friendly pop up.

Called My Wardrobe HQ, there are rails of outfit to rent – from as little as £7, yes, really. And it’s not cut-price brands on offer either. You can rent a Victoria Beckham dress for as little as £10 a day, while there’s plenty to choose from with designers Needle & Thread, Ganni and Isabel Marant to Vampire’s Wife and Zimmerman. Meanwhile, if you head to their website you can even find a £10k Burberry coat on their loan list – although that comes in at £147 a day.

Away from Harrods, if you’re a bit of a budget fashion hound, try The Octavia Foundation’s flagship preloved store on the Brompton Road, which sometimes has high-quality donated goods, including designer and vintage pieces – so well worth a rummage.

Meanwhile, also worth a look is the Pandora Dress Agency. Established in 1947, it offers second hand designer clothes and while most are still eye-wateringly expensive, if you want to splurge/invest on some vintage goodies, they often have an amazing sale.  

Go green

If you’re heading Knightsbridge way it would be a crime not to explore at least some of the 350 acres of the historic Grade I-listed Hyde Park.

One of the eight Royal Parks and once Henry VIII’s private hunting grounds, it’s home to the most stunning landscape alongside a largescale bronze Pan Statue, the famous Speaker’s Corner – andcurrently Winter Wonderland. It also holds the brilliant Serpentine Lake (open Wednesday to Sunday between November and March), where you can hire a pedalo from £6.60 for an adult.

Fine dining on a budget

Sat at the Wellington Arch end of Knightsbridge is the glorious Lanesborough Hotel, famed for being a favourite of the stars from Madonna to Mariah Carey. It’s also the setting for the Lanesborough Grill restaurant. 

Here, if you go a la carte, a plate of (very delicious) Grilled aged English sirloin, bone marrow and oxtail can set you back £52 alone. However, opt for the two course festive set menu and it comes in for almost the same price at £55per person.

Their 2024 set menu comes in even cheaper, with two courses for £39 per person and three courses for £49.50 pp – which means you get all the fanciness and food to-die-for, but at a fraction of the price.

It’s also worth noting that no matter what your budget, the staff treat every customer like an A-lister, replacing napkins when used and topping up glasses without ever needing to be asked. (And the cheese trolley is seriously good!)

For an end of the day drink

Okay, so there’s three ways you can do this. If you want to spoil yourself after a long day of money saving, head to Harrod’s swanky Baccarat bar in the basement of the store. Here the cocktails are next level – but also a bit pricey. For example, the tequila-based Cool Blues really does hit the spot… and the wallet, at £26 a pop.

More mid-price cocktails can be found if you head to Harvey Nichol”s Fifth Floor Bar at the top of the shop, where another tequila based offering, the Tokyo Margariti, will set you back £15. (Although this place doesn’t quite have the exclusive feel of the Bacarrat, the bar has a fun, buzzy vibe and also runs a weekend cocktail masterclass which includes breakfast, lunch, and cocktails for £70 per person – and looked great fun).

However, if you’re still determined to stick to the budget, then The Paxtons Head in the heart of Knightsbridge, is just as good a place as any for a drink.

While this 1900s boozer has a great selection of wine, beer and soft drinks (as well as mirrors with a great story behind them), it doesn’t have such an eclectic mix of cocktails on offer. Although you can get a Mojito Spritzer for under a tenner, so still does the job!

A woman bagged a return flight to Romania for a spa trip that was £100 cheaper than what she would have paid in the UK. 

Everybody loves a good travel hack and one savvy explorer in search of a wellness trip that wouldn’t break the bank was able to whisk herself away for less than she initially expected.

Rebecca Kellet, 37, and her best pal, Sam Martin, 34, flew from Liverpool John Lennon Airport to Henri Coandă International Airport in Bucharest, Romania at 10am on November 19, 2023.

After flying to Romania on Sunday, they spent the next day getting facials and massages, before travelling back to the UK on Tuesday morning.

Despite being very cheap, the pair had a wonderful trip — including a whole day’s worth of lush relaxation.

In terms of their itinerary, after landing the pair headed to their hotel — which cost them £40 each — and visited a couple of bars.

Rebecca and Sam then visited the Therme Spa in Bucharest the following day and only had to part ways with £25.85 each for the experience.

For the flights, accommodation and the spa, the whole trip cost them £97.85 each — which they say £100 cheaper than their usual spa day in the UK.

Rebecca, a gift company business owner from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, said they always arrange a spa trip to celebrate Sam’s birthday.

Usually the pair go to a place much closer to home in Preston, but Rebecca says that their ‘prices have gone up recently’ and a change in the rules means ‘you don’t get as long in the spa’.

After finding the spa in Romania, Rebecca was also able to book cheap flights. 

‘The cost was incredible and the fact that it is a full one-day holiday,’ Rebecca gushed.

‘Usually when you go to a spa you can only get a few hours and here you have the whole day’.

While the evenings keep on getting darker, we don’t mind so much if it means we get to enjoy dazzling Christmas light displays.

From giant baubles, angels and of course, sparkling Christmas trees, they’re festive, fun and, more often than not, free.

And now, the best Christmas light displays in Europe have been crowned, and it was our capital city that came out on top.

Yes, really! From the Oxford Street stars to Carnaby Street’s neon solar system strung up, London was the best overall city for Christmas light displays.

The Regent Street lights were also crowned the top light display in Europe, with four other London spots also making the top 10.

It shouldn’t really come as a surprise that the city shines the brightest at Christmas time, after all, it was also just revealed to be the world’s prettiest Christmas city, beating New York and Paris to claim the top spot. 

The research, by ferry and cruise operator DFDS, used TikTok data to determine where the best light displays in Europe were, compiling a list of places that have garnered the most posts and likes on the video-sharing app.

London was the clear winner, with five of the city’s festive installations making it into the top 10, with the iconic Regent Street angels coming in at number one, thanks to a whopping 2.3 million views on TikTok.

The angels were closely followed by the Covent Garden Christmas lights in second place with 1.4 million views. This year the spectacular display features over 40 giant bells with bows, 12 giant baubles and eight spinning mirror balls. 

Also on the list was Oxford Street in fifth, with Carnaby Street in eighth place and Christmas at Kew rounding out the top 10.

Other noteworthy European light displays that made the cut included Christmas at the Botanics in Edinburgh, the George Square Christmas lights in Glasgow, and Bahnhofstrasse street in Zurich. 

The research also included a list of Europe’s top 10 overall best cities to visit for Christmas light displays. London was of course at number one, but other high ranking cities included Barcelona, Paris, Lisbon, Vienna, and Budapest. 

As well as fabulous Christmas lights, London also has a number of other festive treats to enjoy, from idyllic ice-skating rinks at iconic locations such as Somerset House, Kensington Palace, and Queen’s House in Greenwich.

There are also plenty of cute Christmas markets you can peruse to find the perfect gifts for your loved ones.

Those keen to get into the hustle and bustle of the season can head to Winter Wonderland to enjoy the neon lights, shopping stalls, and giant rides. But if you’d prefer something a little calmer, there’s always the Winter Market at Southbank which is filled with craft stalls and festive food.

‘I try to sleep as much as possible,’ says Petri Kokkonen. ‘That’s our secret in winter.’

The 32-year-old lives in the region of Vätsäri in Finnish Lapland, deep in the Arctic Circle.

While Vätsäri boasts incredible wildlife including reindeer and bears, and the Northern Lights dance in the sky almost every night, this time of year also comes with its challenges.

From October onwards, the region is completely covered in snow, the temperature can stay at -20C for days and, during the depths of winter, the sun doesn’t rise – at all.

At the end of November, Vätsäri is plunged into 24/7 darkness. The sun won’t make an appearance again until January 14, when it will rise for all of about 18 minutes.

For some, the idea of living without a single ray of sunshine is unbearable – but Petri actually chose to trade in city life, in Lapland’s capital, Rovaniemi, to move here.

Having always been fascinated by the forests and lakes of Lapland, he quit his job and decided to pursue a career as a wilderness guide.

He now lives in a log house with his dogs, Elli and Elsa. He has no electricity, gets water from the lake, and hunts his own food. The nearest village, Nellim, is 14 miles away by snowmobile.

It would be a tough way of life for anyone, and as we head into the Polar Night, you’d think it’d be about to get all the more difficult – but Petri doesn’t agree.

‘It’s so beautiful this time of year,’ he says. ‘The frosty mornings and silence of the wilderness, hunting trips with my dogs, the Northern Lights and the millions of stars you can see are just some of the best parts of this time of year.

‘As the temperatures continue to drop, you can really feel and tell when winter is on its way. The -20C nights are the best – you can actually hear Lake Inari freeze over.’

When Petri told his family he was ditching the rat race for Lapland, they were supportive – with Petri saying his love for nature is a family trait.

‘It comes from my father and grandfather,’ he says. ‘When I told my dad, he said that if he was still young and his situation was different, he would do the same.

‘He told me that I was living his dream.’

But the constant darkness and freezing temperature have to be prepared for.

‘I have quite a few things I have to take care of,’ Petri says. ‘Before the ground begins to freeze, I have to harvest the potatoes and onions I grow and also prepare firewood.

‘My boat also has to be lifted out of the water before it freezes – and of course I have to put the garden furniture into storage!

‘And to ensure the water in my kitchen and sauna doesn’t freeze, I have to heat the rooms every morning with the fireplaces.

‘I especially have to pay attention to clothes – make sure I wear enough layers, always take extra clothes, and have dry clothes with me.’

Given Petri lives without electricity, he has to be careful. His energy source of choice, solar panels, come with some obvious difficulties. They energy during February to October – which is then banked for the winter. But, he has to be frugal.

‘I just have USB appliances, a few lights, an inverter for the computer, and a few other larger devices. My refrigerator is also solar powered.

‘I use the phone for basic things such as keeping in touch with friends and family, work, and checking the weather forecast, but the most important thing is security.

‘I save the phone battery as much as possible so that in case something happens, I know that I will be able to call for help.’

Due to the lack of daylight, Petri says the biggest change in his routine comes in the form of sleep (yes, he does have curtains – no, he doesn’t use them in winter).

‘The body can tell when the seasons are changing,’ he says. ‘Those first darker nights, I can tell I need more sleep than in the summer months.

‘It can be difficult to really wake up in the morning. The body feels heavier and a bit frozen.

‘And I begin to get tired earlier in the evening once the days start to get shorter. There are days when I feel like I could sleep from 4pm.’

It’s a phenomenon referred to as ‘Polar Night Fatigue’, and is often experienced by those living within the Arctic Circle.

Some residents choose to use UV lights or supplements to combat the fatigue, but Petri staves off the tiredness by being in nature.

‘I spend my days outside and then during the evening, in my sauna,’ he says.

He also adds that people power through by working during the winter months. After all, Christmas is big business in Lapland.

‘Here in Lapland, many people work in tourism during the winter months and hide their winter fatigue by working.

‘You can make a year’s salary during the winter season from December through to February.’

He also adds that the midnight sun (when the sun never sets) experienced from mid-May to the end of July sees him through the dark days. ‘You would be surprised how much strength a night-less summer gives you!’ says Petri. ‘I find the energy lasts all the way to December.’

Petri says that the community makes an effort to come together during the Polar Night.

‘People are looking for good conversation and to connect,’ says Petri. ‘It’s a time to catch up and share what’s happened over the year. It sounds strange but it’s the way for many.

‘It’s nice to see old friends and reminisce, it always creates a good mood.

He says the winter brings out what he calls ‘Lappish cooperation’. ‘Winter makes our day to day slightly more difficult and many people come together simply to just ask for help,’ he says. ‘If your snowmobile runs out of power, you know right away that you have friends everywhere who are ready to help. It’s quite normal and standard.’

While the darkness is known to bring about a low mood and feelings of negativity, Petri combats that by adjusting his mindset.

‘I just do things that keep my mind fresh, make me feel positive vibes, and put me in a good mood.

‘In minimal daylight, I focus on pleasant things and avoid discomfort. For example, if you’re having a day off and you’re feeling a bit tired, you shouldn’t over exert yourself – just do exactly what you need to stay calm and relaxed.’

But, despite all the positives, does he look forward to the summer months?

‘As spring approaches, I do feel more energised and refreshed when I wake up,’ he admits. ‘When the sun begins to reappear in January, it does somehow bring more happiness and strength.’

Rose Rouse is 70-years old – but don’t you dare feel sorry for her, she says. 

She’s all too aware that some people may think of her as ‘frail’, ‘delicate’ or ‘weak’ due to her age, but in her opinion, she’s anything but.

In fact, Rose can often be seen charging around London with feathers stuck haphazardly out her hair as she flits between poetry readings and dance classes.

She’s no fading wallflower, she adds – in fact, she’s growing every year.

‘There’s an internal ageism many people have,’ Rose tells Metro.co.uk.

‘Older people are told we can’t be sexy, we can’t be fearless, we can’t be creative. But we can be all those things and more. It’s stifling to be told otherwise. 

‘I hate to hear things like ‘you look great for your age’ or ‘you look so young’, like it’s meant to be a compliment. We look our age – it’s fine. There’s nothing wrong with getting older.

‘There’s a permanent assumption that if you reach the age of 70, you must be weak or frail somehow. You become ‘granny’, and that’s it.’

Rose, originally from West Yorkshire, is on a mission to help everyone to embrace aging ‘differently’. 

She admits she got a head start due to her work as a freelance rock and roll journalist in London, where she witnessed the likes of Alannah Joy Currie and Grace Jones take a fist through glass ceilings and stand up to the conventions of society.

Inspired by their ‘feisty and powerful’ presence, she wanted to have the same impact in her own life.

In the 1970s, Rose spent time living in communes in America, called several European cities home – and squatted in a vicarage in Shepherd’s Bush.

‘I’m very much the punk and hippie generation, I’ve inhabited both those places,’ she explains. 

‘I was working at the Institute of Contemporary Arts [a popular London cultural hub] when it hosted the Clash. It was the era of disruption.’

Rose, who now lives in Harlesden, is proud to lead a gaggle of men and women – she nicknames them the ‘punks of getting older’- into battle against ageing misconceptions. 

Alongside friend Suzanne Noble, 62, the pair launched Advantages of Age, as a place to give the older generation encouragement for a new lease of life. A shared Facebook page brings together thousands to share their stories on the magic of maturing.

The idea for their initiative came about as Rose and Suzanne sipped prosecco in a hot tub with friends in 2016. As they downed their drinks, the group lamented at the ‘depressing’ future they had in the eyes of society.

‘It felt like we’d been told we aren’t meant to be having sex, aren’t employable anymore, and no longer creative,’ recalls Rose.

‘But that couldn’t be further from the truth. Suzanne is a can-do New Yorker. She’s a serial entrepreneur and a professional jazz singer. 

‘I’m a journalist, a poet and a dancer, and I’ve made several films in the last few years. Both of us embody and personify what we believe in, so we are several “things” instead of one “thing”. 

‘We’re just getting started,’ she adds.

So much so, Advantages of Age’s first ever awards ceremony is taking place this week, featuring categories such as Style King, Rock n Roll Artist and the most Glorious Getting Older Attitude.

It also tackles the realities of growing old – such as within the Most Innovative Place To Be Buried or Cremated category.  

Although the winners are shrouded in mystery until the ceremony on Thursday, Rose reveals that one man has suggested his ashes be used to form a paint which, in turn, could create a piece of art.

‘We do talk about death’, explains Rose. ‘Death is taboo and we have a “death advocate” category as a bid to change that.

‘We talk about illnesses as well if we have them, but we don’t assume there will be some horrible decline at play. If we are ill, we know there are shared resources out there, we know that sometimes vulnerability is good to share and most importantly, we know we can talk about whatever’s going on.

‘Our community is all about that.’

Rose adds that she’s also eager to shrug off societal norms in all aspects of her life.

She practices a ‘living apart, together’ style relationship with her partner, Asanga, who lives North Wales. She may visit the former GP for weeks at a time before making the five-hour drive back to her home in London.

Asanga is an inspiration in his own right. In a far cry from his medical career, the 80-year-old is now a watercolour artist who does rock-climbing in his spare time.

Rose adds: ‘We dont believe that because we’re old we’re wise. We’re old and curious, and ever-learning.

‘I say I don’t want to be patronised due to the kind of “bless you” approach to older ladies. But I don’t get that often because I am pretty feisty.

‘I have wild hair with flowers sticking out and pretty “out there” outfits most days. Making life into an adventure makes me happy.

‘I’m simply aging differently and wouldn’t it be brilliant if others did the same.’

Jessie Moore is the founder of the award-winning luxury travel blog Pocket Wanderings, and — after literally travelling the whole of the UK — she has revealed the ultimate top 10 bucket list destinations for 2024.

She knows exactly where we should be heading on our staycations next year and the following list is packed full of stunning scenery and history.

So, in no particular order, here are the UK’s 10 must-visit destinations…

Jurassic Coast, Dorset

First on travel expert Jessie’s list is none other than the famous UNESCO World Heritage Site — The Jurassic Coast.

Situated on the Dorset and Devon coastlines, it offers ‘a journey through 185 million years of Earth’s history’.

Jessie tells Metro.co.uk: ‘It’s the only place on Earth where rocks from the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous eras can be seen in one place, which is why I consider this to be a must for any UK bucket list in 2024.

‘Spanning from Exmouth in East Devon to Studland Bay in Dorset, this 95-mile stretch is a geological wonder. It features dramatic cliffs, fossil-rich beaches, and unique formations – you’ve probably heard of the likes of Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove.

‘I love that visiting the Jurassic Coast feels like stepping into a natural history museum but out in the open.

‘It’s a paradise for nature lovers, hikers, and palaeontology enthusiasts who I know will love the rugged landscapes, golden beaches and breathtaking views.’

Isle of Skye, Scotland

Next up, we’re headed to Scotland for our bucket list destinations in 2024, to the stunning Isle of Skye.

‘It may not be the quickest place to get to, but I think that’s part of the Isle of Skye’s appeal, alongside its mesmerising natural beauty,’ says Jessie.

‘It’s known for its rugged landscapes, including the iconic Cuillin mountain range and the mystical Fairy Pools, Skye captivates with its blend of mountainous terrain, serene lochs, and dramatic sea cliffs.

‘The island’s rich Gaelic heritage adds cultural depth, while wildlife lovers will be in their element with plenty to spot from eagles to otters.

‘I’d recommend the Isle of Skye for outdoor enthusiasts, photographers, and anyone seeking to immerse themselves in some breathtaking scenery.’

Canterbury, Kent

For our third UK bucket list destination for 2024 we’re headed to Canterbury in Kent.

It’s ‘famed for its magnificent Canterbury Cathedral’ which, like the Jurassic Coast is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is ‘the heart of the Anglican Communion’.

Jessie says: ‘Rich in medieval history, the city’s ancient walls, originally built by the Romans, enclose a maze of cobbled streets and timber-framed houses.

‘I love that Canterbury offers a captivating blend of history, culture, and architecture, plus a bustling city centre that’s filled with quaint shops and lively restaurants.

‘Don’t miss a visit to Westgate Gardens – whenever I share any content from these gardens, people cannot believe that such a fairytale spot exists in England. I’d recommend visiting on a sunny day when you can enjoy a punt down the river and a picnic in the gardens.’

Giant’s Causeway, Northern Ireland

The Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland is up next, which Jessie describes as a ‘natural marvel’.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site is famed for its roughly 40,000 interlocking basalt columns formed by ancient volcanic activity.

‘I think it’s well worth a visit for its almost otherworldly landscape that you can’t find anywhere else,’ Jessie adds.

‘Legend adds to its allure, with tales of giants walking the causeway. The site offers breathtaking coastal scenery, captivating rock formations, and unique flora and fauna.

‘If you’re lucky, you may even be able to spot a pod of dolphins in the water! I’d recommend the audio guide, which offers a fun and informative way to learn about this incredible site.’

St David’s, Pembrokeshire

Next up is a rather small pinpoint on the UK’s map, but it’s well worth a visit, according to Jessie, who describes it as a ‘hidden gem’.

‘St David’s in Wales is the UK’s smallest city and I love that it offers a unique blend of historical significance and natural beauty,’ she says.

‘Renowned for its splendid St David’s Cathedral, a pilgrimage site dating back to the 12th century, the city has a charming ambience – and I don’t think enough people know about this hidden gem.

‘St David’s is nestled within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, so it’s perfect for combining a spot of cultural exploration with stunning coastal walks and wildlife watching.

‘This charming city, with its art galleries, independent shops, and cosy cafés, is a dreamy haven on the Welsh coastline.’

Lake District, Cumbria

We’ve all heard of the

being a must visit, but Jessie explains that what she loves about this region is the ‘diversity of experiences it offers’.

Interstingly, Jessie thinks it earns a spot on the UK bucket list for 2024 because of its delicious food offerings.

‘It’s understandably popular with adventure and hiking enthusiasts, with plenty of breathtaking scenery to discover. But there’s more to this part of the UK than its fantastic walks,’ Jessie says.

‘If you’re a foodie then it’s an absolute haven for fine dining, with an impressive 10 Michelin-starred restaurants and a plethora of other award-winning restaurants – from cosy gastropubs to high-end restaurants.

‘It’s also a fantastic travel destination for some of the UK’s best luxury hotels and spas. Even if you’ve visited before, the Lake District is a place you can visit time and time again, and have a different experience each time.’

Cambridge

‘Cambridge is one of my favourite cities to visit in the UK and if you haven’t yet visited, I’d definitely recommend adding it to your 2024 UK bucket list,’ says Jessie.

‘Cambridge, renowned for its prestigious university, is a quintessential English city steeped in history and intellectual charm.

‘Its architectural splendour is showcased in the university’s ancient colleges, like King’s College and its iconic chapel.

‘Don’t miss the opportunity to go punting along the serene River Cam for a unique perspective of these historic buildings and lush gardens.’

Jessie also suggests visiting the Fitzwilliam Museum and timing your trip there to coincide with the Cambridge Folk Festival.

‘With a number of truly wonderful hotels, restaurants and cosy cafés, I think this city is a must on any UK bucket list,’ Jessie says.

Portmeirion, North Wales

Up next, is a destination some of us might not be familiar with, despite it once being the backdrop to iconic 1960s TV show The Prisoner, but is well worth the trip.

Jessie tells Metro: ‘For a slice of Italy in the UK, I’d recommend visiting the delightful Portmeirion in Wales. Designed by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, this unique village is styled like an Italianate resort, showcasing vibrant Mediterranean colours and whimsical design.

‘This fairytale village blends art and architecture with stunning natural landscapes, including exotic gardens and serene beaches. It really doesn’t feel like it belongs in the UK!

‘I’d recommend exploring its picturesque squares, charming cottages, and boutique shops. Beyond its aesthetic allure, Portmeirion also hosts cultural events and offers outdoor activities like woodland walks and coastal explorations.’

Isles of Scilly, Cornwall

‘From a slice of Italy in the UK to a slice of the Caribbean, the Isles of Scilly is a true hidden gem with an almost subtropical feel,’ says Jessie.

Situated just off the coast of Cornwall — a beloved UK staycation spot — Jessie explains it has ‘crystal-clear azure waters, white sandy beaches, and a tranquil, slower pace of life’.

‘I love that it really feels like a paradise far removed from mainland Britain,’ she adds.

‘I’m sure that nature lovers will be in their element here, with abundant wildlife, including rare birds and seals, as well as lush and diverse landscapes. The islands offer a variety of activities like walking, snorkelling, and exploring historic sites.’

Cairngorms National Park, Scotland

Another destination in the abundance of offerings Scotland has is the Cairngorms.

Its national park is the second largest in the UK and boasts stunning scenery and wildlife.

Jessie says: ‘It boasts a diverse landscape of ancient forests, rolling hills, rugged mountains, and crystal-clear lochs. This vast wilderness is home to an array of wildlife, including red deer and golden eagles.

‘As I’m sure you can imagine, the park offers endless outdoor activities, from hiking and mountain biking to skiing and snowboarding in winter. For those seeking tranquillity, I think the park’s sweeping vistas and quiet, natural beauty provide a perfect backdrop.’

If you’re a Londoner, you’ve no doubt got some pretty strong opinions on where’s the best place to live in the capital.

The mere mention of ‘south of the river’ leaves some cold, while others may as well get ‘south west is best’ tattooed on their foreheads.

But now, a new ranking has revealed the most desirable areas in London, and it won’t come as a surprise that some of the poshest spots in the capital all make the top 10.

And the neighbourhood people want to move to the most? That goes to north London’s leafy Hampstead.

Known for attracting A-list residents such as Harry Styles and Ricky Gervais, and with the sprawling Hampstead Heath on your doorstep, it’s got a lot to boast about.

But, if you’re house hunting around there, be warned. According to Foxton’s the average price of a Hampstead house last year was a whopping £1,847,180.  

The list, which was part of Time Out’s ranking of the Coolest Neighbourhoods in the World, was compiled by asking 12,000 people about their city’s areas. One of the questions asked was: where would you like to move in your city?  

Second place for Londoners went to Chelsea. While you might bump into a few reality stars there, you can also wonder down the bustling King’s Road, head to the Saatchi Gallery and stroll along the side streets, picking out which townhouse you’d like to move into.

Rounding out the top three was north London’s Islington.

The area’s Upper Street is home to an array of bars, restaurants and shops, or if you fancy a more laid-back afternoon, mooch along the canal – just mind those cyclists.

Plenty of other glam neighbourhoods also made the cut, from Soho to Notting Hill.

Ted Lasso’s Richmond was one of the only south London area to make the cut – but we can see why: the area comes alive during the summer, with a glorious park, and a river perfect attempting to row along.

The other was Greenwich, the home of literal time, as well as the popular market, and stunning views across London from the observatory.

From Thurso in Scotland to Truro in Cornwall, the UK has an impressive array of towns that are well worth a visit.

But if you’re after a day trip to a picture-perfect place, where should you go?

Well, the UK’s prettiest towns have been ranked, and the top spot was claimed by Lewes, in Sussex.

With it’s quaint medieval streets, impressive castle and beautiful parks, you could spend hours mooching around here.

And the best part? It’s just an hour away from London.

The list was revealed by The Telegraph, who asked a group of travel experts to rank Britain’s towns from ugliest to prettiest, based on factors such as shopfront aesthetics, historic architecture, traffic levels, litter volume and the number of viewpoints.

The East Sussex town came out on top with an average rating of 46. It was follows by Queensferry, West Lothian, in Scotland in second place with a score of 45, and St David’s, Pembrokeshire, Wales, which scored 44. 

However, there were some British towns that didn’t fair so well. Down at the bottom of the list was Slough, with the worst score of just 12.

The experts wrote of the Berkshire town: ‘[The] High Street has been rated one of the unhealthiest in the UK for its preponderance of takeways and lack of leisure facilities, and pound shops colonise the stores that cling on in boxy 20th-century shop fronts.’ Ouch.

Methyr Tydfil in Wales was the second ugliest town, and Telfrod, Shropshire came in at third.

What’s so good about Lewes?

Lewes is a quaint mediaeval town nestled in the Sussex countryside, and, to be fair, it is really pretty.

With a historic high street, a castle, bustling Christmas markets and acres of green space, the traditional market town is certainly a top contender for most beautiful places in the UK.

Plus, it was named best place to live in Sussex for 2023, which is partly down to its banging local beer and even more banging bonfire night celebrations — the biggest in the country. 

How to get to Lewes from London

The two best ways to get from London to Lewes is by train or car — but the train is more than twice as fast as driving. 

You can get from London Victoria Lewes in just over an hour. Tickets cost around £6 when you book in advance. 

It takes around 2-and-a-half hours to drive from London to Lewes following the A2.

When you think of summer getaways, Spain, Portugal and Greece no doubt spring to mind.

But a budget airline has just launched bargain flights to a European city that is so often forgotten by holidaymakers.

Wizz Air is offering flights from London Luton to Chişinău – the capital of Moldova – for just £17.99 one way.

After a brief suspension earlier this year, the flights now operate every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

In just three hours and 15 minutes you could be in the land locked country, where temperatures typically reach the high 20s in mid-June.

If you decide to take advantage of the cheap flights, be sure to put the Mileștii Mici winery at the top of your list. The cellar has 34 miles of underground galleries and holds the Guinness World Record for having the biggest wine collection in the world – nearly two million bottles. 

But if the mere thought of that hangover is enough to put you enough, there’s still plenty to do.

Moldova was part of the Soviet Union until 1991, meaning Chişinău is perfect for architecture buffs, as it’s filled with examples of Soviet and brutalist architecture.

There’s also the Nativity Cathedral, which was built in the 1830s before being destroyed in WW2. Now, it’s been rebuilt, and stands in the heart of the capital.

Not far from the cathedral, visitors can find the National Museum of History of Moldova. Costing just over €1, there are over 265,000 exhibits including a replica of St Stefan’s sword, the weapon of a warrior revered across the nation.

They’re as much a part of Christmas as Santa Claus and mince pies – for many, there’s nothing quite as festive as heading to a Christmas market.

But they don’t often come cheap. Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland will cost you £7.50 – and that’s just to get in. It’s £11.50 to go on the Ferris wheel, and a Bratwurst and alcoholic drink meal deal comes in at a hefty £15.00.

But, if you look a little further afield, you can get a whole lot more bang for your Christmas buck.

A new survey looked into the 12 most popular Christmas market destinations, comparing the cost of short breaks to see were you’ll get best value.

The research, by the Post Office, factored in the cost of things like flights, transfers, meals and those all important Christmas market must-haves such as mulled wine and cakes.

So which destination claimed the top spot? The Latvian capital of Riga. It’s the fifth year in a row that the medieval city was ranked in first place.

Two people can head to Riga for two nights for just £506. A glass of mulled wine, punch or gluhwein there is a bargain at just £3.50 and a seasonal treat like a gingerbread or stollen is just £3.12.

Even a caffeine hit is great value – a cup of coffee is just £1.96.

As for how to get there? Brits can expect to pay around £307 for two people for B&B accommodation and flights.

Riga’s Christmas Market takes place in Dome Square, in the shadow of Riga Cathedral, and begins on the first Sunday of Advent.

As well as artisan stalls selling gifts like gingerbread and candles, there’s also street-food vendors selling fast-food as well as Latvian specialties.

This year, there’ll be a Santa’s Grotto for kids, and a DJ will play every Friday night. On Saturdays, guests will be treated to choirs and other performers, while folk artists take centre stage on the Sunday.

If you don’t quite fancy Riga, there are still some other cheap Christmas market hotspots to visit.

Stockholm, Sweden, was a perhaps surprising runner up, thanks to cheaper flight costs – overall, costs were down 25% compared to last year. Here, a glass of mulled win costs £3.88. Overall, a two day break for two will cost £559.50.

Rounding out the top three was the Croatian capital of Zagreb, where costs are just 10p higher than Stockholm. A festive mini break here will set you back just £559.60.

An Airbnb guest has shared his shock after finding a webcam nestled within the sofa at his holiday home.

Ian Timbrell, 41, was away with work in Aberystwyth, Wales, and was initially underwhelmed with the condition of the property compared to the pictures on the site.

The former deputy head teacher, who now trains schools in LGBTQ+ inclusion, went out for dinner but found the property infested with flies upon his return.

But then, Ian made an even more uncomfortable discovery.

He told Metro.co.uk: ‘I bought bug spray, and as I was spraying, happened to see the camera that was in the sofa. It made me feel incredibly uneasy as prior to that I had been sat right next to it watching television.

‘Whilst I wouldn’t have done anything embarrassing or private in front of that camera, it still felt like a violation.

‘I felt so uneasy as for all I knew there were other cameras in the house. I was then forced at nine o’clock at night to get a hotel room elsewhere.’

After complaining, Ian did gratefully receive a full refund back from Airbnb for the fly problem, but says he has ‘not heard anything about the camera, despite sending them the information’.

Cameras are allowed in Airbnbs, according to the company’s own online guidelines, but they must follow certain rules.

‘T’o help provide hosts and guests with peace of mind, security measures, such as security cameras and noise-monitoring devices, are allowed as long as they are clearly disclosed in the listing description and don’t infringe on another person’s privacy,’ the site says.

Under the subheading ‘what we do allow,’ it says: ‘Devices that allow for viewing or monitoring of only a public space (e.g. a front door or a driveway) or a common space that are clearly identified and disclosed ahead of a reservation are permitted. Common spaces do not include sleeping areas or bathrooms.’

But the site says it doesn’t allow: ‘

• Concealed and undisclosed devices monitoring common spaces: Any device monitoring a common space should be installed in a visible manner and disclosed in the listing description.
• Devices located in or monitoring private spaces: Devices should never monitor private spaces (e.g. bedrooms, bathrooms or common areas that are being used as sleeping areas, such as a living room with a sofa bed).’

Ian, from Cardiff, took to social media to share his ‘weird’ experience in the Airbnb property. He wrote: ‘Ok, normal or weird? My Airbnb has a webcam watching the whole living room.

‘Am I wrong to have unplugged it? Seems like a huge invasion of privacy to me!’

In a follow up video, Ian said: ‘So after finding the creepy webcam in my Airbnb, it’s now been infested with flies.’

The internet was equally as horrified. One user wrote: ‘Dang! That sounds horrible. Good luck in finding another place. Yuck!’

Another said: ‘Ugh I’d have nightmares after that,’ while someone else wrote: ‘This is wrong on every single level.’

In a statement given to Metro.co.uk, an Airbnb spokesperson said: ‘The presence and location of the device was disclosed in the listing description before booking, However we appreciate that our guest did not have a positive experience. While the guest did not contact us about this, we have proactively reached out to offer support and the Host has fully refunded them. We enforce strict rules on recording devices and take action on rare issues brought to our attention.’

Sure, London may have just scooped the title as the world’s prettiest Christmas city, but there’s plenty of other destinations to explore over the chillier months.

In fact, TripAdvisor has just named its top trending destinations for winter, as part of its Seasonal Travel Index for 2023, and there’s something for everyone.

So whether you love twinkling city lights at Christmas, or prefer to escape the miserable chills in search of warm and balmy climates, there’s a destination for you on this top 10 list.

Scooping first place is Amsterdam – and it’s hardly a surprise considering the city comes alive in the winter time with its charming Christmas markets and pretty cobbled streets (which look even better with a touch of frost coating them).

For those searching for winter sun, Mexico’s Cancun takes second place on the list – ideal for individuals who prefer to enjoy margaritas on a beach, rather than sip mulled wine at a cold festive market.

Third position in the rankings goes to Rovaniemi, in Lapland, which is hardly surprising for a winter roundup. Promising a positively snow-dusted, magical festive experience, this city in Finland is the official hometown of Santa Claus.

Elsewhere on the list, more winter sun places take centre stage with the likes of Mexico’s Playa del Carmen and Punta Cana, in Dominican Republic, rounding off the top five. Alongside spots in Turkey and Cyprus elsewhere in the top 10.

Amsterdam is less-crowded in winter, but is equally as beautiful, meaning shorter queues at the major museums and attractions. Sounds like a win, win.

2. Cancun, Mexico

The winter months are top travel times in Cancun, as this is when weather average temperatures are at their most pleasant, with highs of around 28°C from December to February.

3. Rovaniemi, Lapland

Naturally, Christmas travel to Rovaniemi is extremely popular, so January is actually the more affordable time to go here.

4. Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Those in search of winter sun will certainly find it here, with the average daily maximum at 27°C and the minimum at 20°C. Far warmer than the UK’s miserable offering.

5. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Winter in Punta Cana is usually less rainy and humid than other times of year, so is the perfect time to visit.

6. Istanbul, Turkey

Skip the summertime queues by heading to this spot off-season – just be sure to pack a warm coat as temperatures don’t tend to go above 11°C.

7. Paris, France

Paris is brilliant all-year round, but there’s something magical about seeing the city’s landmarks dusted in snow.

8. Paphos, Cyprus

Cyprus has one of the warmest winters in the Mediterranean, making it the perfect winter destination – and its beaches are just as beautiful all-year round.

9. Tulum, Mexico

Off the coast of Madeira’s capital, Funchal, the Atlantic shimmers silver as glossy black pilot whales gently break the surface before submerging, just as effortlessly. 

I’m here for a wellness break, and this scene on my last day epitomises the whole experience – there’s no hullaballoo as whales sensationally leap from the ocean. Instead, they gently swim alongside us, the sea serene as a sense of calm overtakes all. 

Like many busy urbanites I’ve travelled far and wide in search of relaxation. From beachside yoga in Mexico to Mediterranean spa resorts, there’s a growing demand for retreats with so many of us frazzled by life’s stresses and city living.  

But Madeira’s one of those destinations hiding in plain sight, a Portuguese island I thought I knew about but somehow had never visited. Friends also seem confident about where it is, but then can’t quite pin it down on a map. 

Closer to Casablanca than Lisbon, its nearest neighbours are the Canary Islands. Madeira is also part of an archipelago of volcanic Atlantic isles, yet has something distinct that sets it apart. In fact, Madeira’s sub-tropical southern coast, lush topography and northern cloud-forested mountains are more redolent of Brazil or Ecuador than anywhere in Europe.  

And that might be why it’s proving to be the perfect spot for those seeking rest and rejuvenation. Just over three hours flying from London, and a surprising five-and-a-half from New York, it seems much more remote, jutting out of the ocean like a verdant, uncut emerald, its green-topped crags surrounded by turquoise seas and crashing surf. It’s a heady, exotic mix.   

With a year-round temperate climate, lush vegetation and an abundance of fruit, it seems as though I’ve washed up in another Eden. Given its fecundity, it comes as no surprise to find that the capital, Funchal, is so named because of the abundant wild fennel (funcho in Portuguese) growing when the first settlers arrived, while madeira itself means wood or forest – the Madeiran archipelago literally translates as islands of trees.

And trees are my first experience of the island. A drive up through the winding roads and cliff-hewn tunnels transports me into the green interior, where ancient laurel trees dominate the landscape. Over the next few days I’ll see more of the north, taking a joyful jeep tour with Bravelanders through thick forest to arrive at jaw-dropping coastal cliffs, the views pierced by tall spikes of colour (like the flowering red aloe vera and Echium candicans, aptly known as Pride of Madeira). Later, I’ll get to taste award-winning, low-alcohol wines and stay at the beautifully situated luxury Terrabona villas near Boaventura. 

For now, though, I’m joining a small group at the Yeotown retreat, the first fully dedicated wellness centre in Madeira, and a sister to the original award-winning site in North Devon. Their mantra is ‘strong in body, clear in mind’, with an ethos to restore and replenish. Like the Devonian Yeotown, this property is strategically placed by the Atlantic, amidst breath-taking, hilly scenery, perfect for walks and cold-water immersion. Each private room and villa is furnished to perfection too.

I’ve arrived a day later than other guests, and I can already sense that I’m out of sync, their hair wet from recent swims in the pool, skin aglow and beaming, having enjoyed a morning yoga class.   

Kellie’s behind everything here, and greets me on arrival, flowing in white and smiling beatifically. She hands me a little brown bag containing the most delicious vegetarian lunch I’ve ever eaten, plus a scrumptious organic apple. ‘You must be hungry’, she anticipates. I wonder if I’ve Ianded in a fairy tale? She seems too kind and beautiful to be true, and has an uncanny knack of knowing what you need – later suggesting I should drink water, a nano-second before I open my mouth to ask for some. 

The recent television series Nine Perfect Strangers comes to mind, where a similarly perfect Nicole Kidman greets city dwellers who’ve come to face their respective demons in search of nirvana. I shake off the notion, and as I bite into the apple later under the shade of an enormous laurel I think again of Eden. Our forest guide seems to read my mind – there are no snakes lurking in Madeira, he happily tells me.  

Olga, a Yeotown therapist, has accompanied us into the woods at Fanal, the protected UNESCO Laurissilva Forest, guiding us through calming breathwork and meditation. We find somewhere comfortable to sit amongst the roots of centuries-old trees. When she plays her violin, a light breeze emanates from nowhere, and waterfall-like tree fronds flow in harmony with her.  

We open our eyes, visibly moved by the grounding yet spiritual experience. So, this is forest bathing. Somehow, I’m now at one with the rest of the group and we walk out of this enchantment and into the open sunshine, any vestiges of cynicism left behind. I wonder later if a woodland sprite like Shakespeare’s Puck has come to sprinkle us with a friendship potion? We’ve magically bonded, and what comes next is only going to strengthen it.  

Returning to Yeotown for an invigorating soundbath, the resonant tones of the instruments vibrate through each of us on different levels. Then we are taken separately for our massages. The menu on offer ranges from energetic Thai to a more gentle, Hawaiian style of therapy with oils, which is what I’m signed up for.

Maybe it’s the recent flight and a stressful week, but I come out of it feeling slightly discombobulated. It takes a while for me to regain my equilibrium. The others, however, emerge either bright-eyed and reinvigorated or almost somnambulant, too relaxed to remain upright.   

Congregating near the pool, it feels like we’ve taken a drag on a peace pipe. One of the guests says he’ll book a daily massage once he returns home. He’s still on cloud nine the next day too, glowing like one who’s experienced an epiphany. 

We dine alfresco, surrounded by candles and garlands, seated on floor cushions on the grass. By now we’re firm friends, and it’s still only my first day here. There’s no dramatic sunset tonight, but the sky is laced with layers of cloud, blending soft edged into the horizon. Talented chef Thomas brings us golden snapper cooked over open flames, garnished with leaves and herbs freshly plucked from the organic and medicinal gardens. With a pescatarian menu and fully teetotal, we drink kombucha with lemon slices, which seems to enhance the flavours of the seafood and accompanying pineapple and vegetables. 

Yeotown’s ethos is to nurture and nourish, and I can’t think of anywhere more appropriate to experience its magic.

With a small population of under 270,000 Madeira still feels relatively undiscovered. ‘Hidden gems’ are a bit of cliché, but Madeira has the air of a remote utopia, or even something mythical like Brigadoon, appearing only intermittently for preservation’s sake.  

Ah, now maybe that’s why so few people know where to find it!

It’s the time of year when Christmas enthusiasts will be heading to ice rinks and markets, ready for some festive fun.

Far flung destinations like New York, with it’s Rockefeller Centre Christmas tree, will be a bucket-list trip for many, or families may head to Lapland, where children can visit Santa Claus at home.

But when it comes to the world’s most picturesque Christmas spot, you don’t have to travel as far as you might think.

In a recent study, we’re very pleased – and not at all surprised – to announce that our very own London was awarded the number one spot.

The research by long-haul holiday specialists, Travelbag, analysed Instagram hashtags for 100 of the best-rated cities.

With more than 270,000 hashtags, London was the winner, with New York in at second place with 255,000.

Paris comes in at number three, while those looking for a slightly balmier Christmas, will be pleased to hear that Dubai is fourth.

Completing the top five is Chicago, the setting for everyone’s favourite Christmas film, Home Alone.

While we rarely get a white Christmas here in London (we last saw snow in London on Christmas Day in 1999), it can still be pretty picture-perfect during the holidays.

The Christmas lights are already twinkling on Oxford Street, and elsewhere, visitors to Covent Garden will be treated to a display of over 40 giant bells with bows, 12 giant baubles and eight spinning mirror balls.

And, while you’re out on London’s shopping streets, you may as well pop into Hamley’s – the oldest toy store. Whether you’re a big kid, or an actual kid, walking into the giant shop feels like walking into a the elves workshop, with pretty much every toy a child could think to add on their Christmas list.

The capital is also home to some idyllic ice-skating rinks, the most famous of which sits in the courtyard of Somerset House, underneath the iconic Christmas tree.

And, if it’s Christmas markets you’re after, you’re spoilt for choice. Of course, there’s the slightly heady Winter Wonderland, with it’s neon lights and giant rides, but there are other more low-key options too.

The Winter Market on the Southbank is great choice for those who want to mooch among the craft stalls in the shadow of the London Eye, with a beer in one hand and a German sausage in the other.

But in a bid to help bank balances everywhere, Skyscanner has unveiled a list of some of the best budget ski destinations, for those wanting to experience the slopes – but are cautious of the costs.

Lots of the named locations are under-the-radar spots – so are more affordable than the in-demand star players of the ski world.

Livigno, Italy

Laura explains that duty-free zone Livigno offers excellent slopes for intermediate skiers.

‌Söll, Austria

‘On the other end of the spectrum, Söll in Austria is relatively quiet and affordable, so ideal for families and new skiers,’ adds Laura.

Grandvalira, Andorra

‌While most head to the Alps to ski, some locals within France and Spain prefer to stay within the southwest, explains Laura.

This mountain paradise is the largest in Andorra with more than 210km of runs. But there’s fun away from the pistes too, with a zip line, alpine coaster and freeride area to enjoy.

‌Borovets, Bulgaria

Along with its cousins, Bansko and Pamporovo, the ski resort of Borovets is ideal for a bargain hunter.

‌It’s also a spot for those of enjoy the après, just as much as the skiing.

Laura continues: ‘The price of food and drink in-and-around the slopes is reasonable and it’s popular with the younger ski crowd who come to party. Borovets in Bulgaria is also known for its lively après-ski if that’s what you’re after.’

Poiana-Brasov, Romania

‌Poiana Brasov is Romania’s biggest mountain resort and is also one of the nicest – with glistening slopes and pine trees for your backdrop.

Plus, with 24km of ski runs, there’s lots to get stuck into.

‌Laura says: ‘The nearby village has plenty of accommodation options and restaurants, with traditional Romanian fare and mulled wine keeping you warm at night. If you’re looking for day trips away from the slope, you’re only 14km from the medieval city of Brasov and 23km from Dracula’s Castle.’

As dining experiences go, Inca stands out. Its darkly lit, majestic interior transports you to a luxe, seductive imagining of the Inca Empire, from the plush seating to the elegant dark wood design. The menu boasts an impressive mix of Latin-influenced and Japanese fusion dishes, with an equally exciting vegetarian offering (you will not believe the grilled shiitake mushroom isn’t meat). Dinner here is certainly not cheap, and with a minimum spend of £150pp don’t expect a casual night out (the £75 mezcal durango cocktail should make you double take). The justification, however, is the entire experience, enhanced by exceptional (and rather steamy) dance peformances. If you have the money, there are very few places like it.

Independently-owned and best known for its brunch menu, The Table prides itself on working with local suppliers and sustainability. It first opened its doors in 2005 in Southwark, but now it’s expanded to Battersea Rise. Highlights include the Long Weekender (smashed avocado, eggs and chives) with added bacon and halloumi – all smothered in maple syrup – and the refreshing mixed berry, mint and kale juice. Reasonably priced, lovely bustling atmosphere and hearty grub – what more could you ask for?

The iconic Shoreditch pub knows how to do Sundays, with a menu including  Roasted Pork & Apple Sauce, Bavette, Horseradish Cream & Pomme Anne. All roasts are served with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, honey glazed carrot, roasted parsnip, greens and gravy and made with herbs grown in the pub’s own roof garden. It doesn’t get more local than that!

With its ancient walled towns, rugged mountains, crystal blue coves and natural wonders, Croatia has been named Lonely Planet’s top European destination to explore in 2024.

Or, you could do as I did, and outsource that admin entirely. 

Croatia has one of the fastest growing small cruise industries in the world, transporting travellers from port to port alongside 30-40 other guests. 

These boats promise a personalised, intimate service for a fraction of the cost of a charter yacht. They’re also less of an eyesore or environmental drain than the giant cruise liners hosting 3,000+ guests. 

Our boat, MV Memories, part of the fleet owned by Unforgettable Travel, hosts a maximum of 38 guests, with eight crew members on hand to serve you French toast for breakfast, keep your cabin spick and span, and mix you an Old Fashioned at the bar, just how you like it.

We joined the ship as it made its seven-day voyage along Croatia’s coastline, island hopping between Split and Dubrovnik, stopping off the beaten track at Trogir, Krka National Park, Hvar, Vis, Korcula, Mljet National Park, Ston and Slano.

First impressions were good. The boat was sleek, our balcony cabin was pristine, the staff were welcoming, and the jacuzzi gently bubbled on the sundeck, waiting for its first use.

As our fellow guests joined, my enthusiasm waned a little. The team at Unforgettable Travel say they have a larger proportion of ‘younger guests’ than other cruise liners. But at 32 and 33, my husband and I were the youngest on board by at least 20 years, with the majority of guests in their late fifties and sixties.

Boating may have had a millennial pop culture boom thanks to Below Deck, White Lotus and Triangle of Sadness, but it hasn’t translated into bookings just yet.

We endured a few jibes about being the ‘babies of the group’ and listened to discussions about TV shows that stopped airing before we were born, but as the week progressed past awkward small talk, we were pleasantly surprised to find people who were generous, fun, and very much young at heart. This well-travelled bunch of retired CEOs, attorneys, physicians and advertising execs had led fascinating lives with stories to tell. Clearly, I’d been too quick to judge.

Most days on the ship follow the same basic structure: a breakfast buffet and time to utilise the sun deck while you sail for a couple of hours, a swim stop at an idyllic cove (where a jet ski, paddle boards, water floats and snorkels are available), then a three course lunch on the ship before docking in the early afternoon for a group excursion or solo explore.

The stops

The tiny town of Trogir became an early favourite thanks to its laid back charm and stunning mix of Romanesque, Renaissance and Baroque architecture. We stumbled across a classical concert in the park and spent the evening perched on a children’s slide, listening to talented musicians perform under moonlight.

Then there was Hvar, a cosmopolitan port made famous by a young Prince Harry, who jumped fully clothed into a swimming pool in one of the island’s clubs.

By day, you’ll want to visit the Fortica Fortress, where a 20-minute uphill walk will reward you with stunning views of the terracotta roofs and crystal clear waters below.

By night, Hvar is both a place to see and be seen, the warm lighting making both it – and its guests – more beautiful. Dig out a dress and heels and join the elegant crowds visiting elegant cocktail bars. Don’t bother trying to sleep before midnight. 

Korčula is another island where old meets new. Known as ‘Little Dubrovnik,’ there’s signs of mediaeval majesty and its former Venetian rule on every corner, but without the crowds and Game of Thrones gift shops that have taken over its larger counterpart.

The palm-tree lined old town is thought to be the birthplace of adventurer Marco Polo, but today, you’ll find modern restaurants, gelato shops and bars within its cobbled streets. Expect to pay London prices though – and then some. Two drinks at the Sunset Vista bar (one cocktail, one mocktail) cost us €28 (£24).

With less character than the others, the towns of Slano and Vis were two we could have missed, though we did enjoy a fantastic dinner at the latter (more on that later). 

Having visited both Split and Dubrovnik before, a day was plenty of time for us to reacquaint ourselves with the larger arrival and departure ports, though first-time travellers may feel a little rushed.

Be sure not to miss The Peristyle within Diocletian’s Palace, a square in the centre of Split where you can sip wine and listen to live music. History buffs will want to walk the city walls of Dubrovnik, but to avoid the crowds (and the heat), watch the tourists go by with a coffee down one of the many shaded side streets.

The cruise package includes an excursion each afternoon, with the flexibility to dip in and out if you fancy splintering away from the group. We chose to skip a couple of the walking tours, realising quickly that we preferred to explore the old towns solo. But there are a few group activities you won’t want to miss.

World-famous Ston is the only place on earth to farm the Ostrea Edulis species of oyster. You’ll join a small boat across the bay to the farm, where a worker will talk you through the netting technique before a tasting session with wine and mussels. The process is fascinating to witness even if you don’t like oysters, and the excursion includes an alternative tasting of cheese and prosciutto for anyone who’d prefer.  

I’d also recommend joining the Blue Cave tour off the island of Bisevo, which is the only excursion not included in the price of the cruise, at an extra €20 per person. The reason for this is because the cave is only accessible through a tiny hole in the rock, and the tours are sometimes cancelled if weather conditions or tidal changes threaten to seal the entrance. Though a tight squeeze that involved some ducking (!) we were lucky to see the stunning natural phenomenon inside. 

Finally, both national parks are must-sees. The first, Krka National Park, is renowned for its awe-inspiring waterfalls. The second, Mljet National Park, hosts pristine lakes with the most majestic reflections I’ve ever seen.

While Krka is all about walking, you can hire bikes, kayak or swim to explore Mljet. For these excursions, stick with your tour guide to pick up your tickets, then head off on your own track to soak up the sweet sounds of nature without the background babble.

Where to eat

Though lunch is provided on the boat, you’ll want to leave room to enjoy dinner out and about. A few recommendations:

Trogir: The courtyard restaurant Franka offers a local seafood pot for two with pasta, white wine and tomato sauce that’s so good, you’ll want to order bread to mop up every last drop.

Hvar: Another beautiful courtyard setting under an orange tree, the smell of Restaurant Palace Paladini alone drew us in. Order the best lamb cutlets you’ve had in your life, cooked on the open grill.

Vis: With its twinkling fairy lights, the stunning Lola Konoba & Bar redeemed our opinion of Vis, which was otherwise the most underwhelming stop. The starters (grilled octopus and cuttlefish ink croquettes) were the highlights here.

Korcula: A 15-minute taxi from the main town, Agroturizam Grubinjac offers the chance to relax surrounded by olive trees, breathtaking views and home-cooked grub. Expect grilled meat and veg dishes with no frills and plenty of flavour.

Dubrovnik: To end your week with a flourish, the Michelin-recommended Restaurant Dubrovnik combines traditional Dalmatian cuisine with high-end dining. I’m not sure you can go wrong with your order, but the lobster with parsnip, asparagus, garlic and raspberry powder was a showstopper. 

The verdict:

Travelling by small cruise gives you unrivalled access to Croatia’s hidden gems, allowing you to escape the crowds of the country’s most famous hotspots and access little-known ports with unique personalities. Really, it’s a shame more people our age don’t sign up.

A few simple tweaks may help the ships attract a younger clientele. For us, the three-course sit-down group lunches (featuring dishes like soup, duck breast and apple pie) were far too heavy, formal and time-consuming. Give me a quick salad bar or slice of pizza to go and more time to explore the stunning surroundings any day. 

We couldn’t fault the crew, though, who really went above and beyond to offer a luxury experience for each and every guest.

The mix of culture and coast makes Croatia one of the favourite countries I’ve ever visited. Next time I’ll drag some mates along, to recalibrate the average age of our shipmates just a tad.

A Dutch city has been awarded the prestigious title of ‘European City of the Year’.

It’s got canals, bikes and a museum full of Van Gogh paintings. No, not Amsterdam, but the historic city of Amersfoort.

No, we hadn’t heard of it before either – but don’t let that put you off.

The city, located to the west of the Amsterdam, boasts an old town centre, with buildings dating back to medieval times.

Muurhuizen Street, an almost circular street, is said to be one of the most beautiful in the entire city, and tourists enjoy strolling along it, popping into the shops and eating at one of the restaurants.

Like the Dutch capital, Amersfoort also has a canal system, complete with bridges and gates, which can be explored on a boat tour.

And, for art buffs, the city is home to the second largest collection of Van Gogh paintings. It’s also the birth place of Neo-Plasticism artist, Piet Mondrian, and visitors can head to the Mondriaanhuis, the birthplace and childhood home of the painter.

If it’s views you’re after, the city has that too. The Lieve Vrouwe tower is all that is left after the original church was blown up accidentally.

It’s just 100m tall, but if you make the climb you’ll rewarded with stunning views over the city.

Amersfoort was given the honour by The Academy of Urbanism in London, who visited the city to evaluate its sustainability, urban planning, and management.

It was also praised for the quality of life that residents can enjoy, as well as how its character and heritage is maintained.

‘Amersfoort focuses on the wellbeing and happiness of its citizens, from moves to limit car use to the provision of diverse and good quality affordable homes,’ the jury said.

Amersfoort was shortlisted for the prize along with Estepona, in Spain’s Costa Del Sol, and Exeter, in Devon, England.

If you’re keen to check out Amersfoort, it’s fairly easy to get to. You’ll need to either fly into Amsterdam Schiphol airport, or get the Eurostar to Amsterdam Centraal.

Trains run to Amersfoort from Amsterdam Centraal. There are about two fast trains every hour that will get you there in about 30 minutes.

With the cost of just about everything rising, a holiday feels out of the question for some.

But one Londoner flew to Milan for just £27, enjoying a luxury spa day and some proper excellent food before flying back before bedtime.

Ehteshan Hanifa, 29, told Metro.co.uk the entire trip cost him just £156, including pasta, pizza, gelato, train connections and hours of pampering.

Ehteshan shared his exploits on X, where over 1 million users enjoyed his retelling of his trip.

The post, which received over 11,000 likes, was captioned: ‘£27 05:45 to Milan, spa day, pasta, pistachio pizza, gelato and catching the 20:30 flight back to London.’

Alongside the captions were also four pictures detailing his exciting yet short lived trip to the Italian city.

Speaking to Metro, Ehteshan explained that his inspiration for the day excursion came from TikTok. ‘I was on TikTok and a video of the QC Termemilano spa appeared on my page and I decided to go to it,’ he said.

‘Once decided, I called my friend and told him about the spa. I’ve been to Milan before, so I told him you don’t really need more than a day there. So, immediately we decided to find an early morning flight and return on the same day but later at night.’

He found his very cheap and early flights on Skyscanner and highly recommends the site for last-minute deals.

‘I went on Skyscanner and played around with the dates,’ he recalls. ‘I found a Ryanair flight from London Stansted at 05.45 and a return flight back to London at 20:30 for £27.

‘When my friends found out how cheap the flights were, five of them joined me. We booked it and the plan for the day was to land at Milan Berghamo just before 9am and to go to the spa at 10.30am, stay there for a few hours as the ticket we bought allowed us to stay for up to five hours.

‘We left the spa at 14.30 and took the train to the city centre, did some exploring, grabbed something to eat such as pizza, pasta and gelato, found a place to watch some football matches and caught the train to Milan Malpensa airport and flew back home.’

For others who wish to do something similar, Etheshan has some sage advice.

‘The main piece of advice I’d give to others is to go on travel websites like Kayak,’ he explains. ‘Play around with the dates to see if you can find cheap flights. Ryanair, Wizzair and Wasyjet are always doing cheap flights.

‘Once you book your flights, visit Tiktok and search different cities and see what kind of activities you can do there and you can organise your entire trip from there.

‘I did a similar trip to Cologne last July where I went there for just one day too. There are so many cities you can visit for a day without having to break the bank.’
